I havea quick question. I have a stock 93 subaru impreza, I have some extra cash and would like to make it better for highway driving. The problem is, is that the engine is going to 3 to 3 1/2 rpm's on the highway at only 60 to 65 mph. How can I get this lower? and, how can I get better acceleration in fourth and fifth gears when racing?? btw it is a manual transmission.

Regards,
Nate

hi nate.try incresing the diameter of the tyre ,that gives higher speeds at lower RPM .it will make u fuel efficent down side is 0-60 MPH is slower .and keep reducing the dia its opposite. and you have to compromise on any one of the above

Thumbs up

I know what you mean. These cars are just not cruising cars and i cant imagine how it makes you feel driving those long Highways over there.

These are punchy twisty country road cars and not designed for say long periods of high speed. Dont know what the new sixth gear is like in the newer versions as i drive a 93wrx also.

I'm sure it would be more beneficial to buy a different car than start messing with gear ratios.

Get yourself a Nissan 300zx twin turbo. I sold mine as it was a great cruiser(Could have sat at 140+mph if you wanted for hours on end) but scared the hell out of me on twisty country roads, especially in the wet!!

You're tying to achieve 2 opposing aims there.
To get a good highway/motorway cruiser you want a nice high top gear. But you also want better acceleration in the high gears, which demands lower ratio top gears.

You may find a remap gives you better torque, but unless you change the gear ratios you're not gonna get a better cruising RPM.
