sixt gear on STI
#1
Hi all!
Is there a big difference in the STI's gear no. 6 in cmparison to the WRX no. 5.
I mean does it make a difference on the highway in terms of substantial lower rpm ?

So at 8000rpm it would be doing 240mph ?? I dont think so somehow.
As stated in other threads a UK STI 6speed will give approx 24.25mph/1000rpm.
A UK 5 speed will be very close to that, so top gear is pretty similar.
Jap Spec STI 6speeds have a shorter 6th gear, and would manage 21.9mph/1000rpm.

Well my rev counter must be wrong then.
Like I said 120 was about 4000 RPM there or there abouts, The rev light was set for 4000 and I think I went past that for another 500 RPM.
I'll give it a go on the way to work tomorrow to check

IIRC, 6th gear on the STi is actually a tiny fraction lower than 5th gear on the WRX; i.e. the WRX will give slightly lower revs than the STi on the cruise. Difference is very small, perhaps a hundred revs at motorway speed.
The difference with the STi 6 speed is that the intermediate gears are shorter and closer than the WRX 5 speed.

Hi all!
I found this info on the internet!
"Instead of turning the STi’s sixth gear into an economy-orientated overdrive, Subaru’s engineers have chosen low gearing for lively acceleration. For example, the STi’s fourth gear virtually matches third on the standard WRX, while sixth pulls 24.5 mph/1000 rpm versus the WRX’s 24.7/1000 rpm."

That will be a comparison of a UK STI7 and a MY02 UK WRX.
An early model Jap WRX will have a shorter overall top gear than that.
A Jap STI7 will also have a shorter 6th gear as I previously stated.
Not sure about ordinary Jap spec new model WRX's, but basically there are lots of variations all round.
