Occasional Starting problem
#1
Its happened a couple of times now, turn the key and it just cranks over not firing, turn ignition off and back on, try again and it fires up as normal?
Anybody seen this problem before anything I should check/look out for?
Thanks.

I'm in the same boat. It has really baffled our local dealer. The car is booked in again this week so that they can have a really good look at it so I will see if what they find helps you guys as well. Out of interest what have you got?

If its under warranty get em to check all the sensors. Its usually down to the crank sensor, cam sensor or temperature sensor. Sometimes its a dodgy MAF. I had the same on a MY99, MAF change made no difference, but the crank position sensor did. It also made the MPG better for some reason Its only not started properly once since then. And it was covered in ice at the time, so I put that down to it being so cold.

My 99 turbo did it last week. Turned over for about 10 seconds before it fired up. It was very cold at the time and it hasn't happened since.

Mine used to do this also but worked out that if I park with the front up to my fence it always starts fine. Also try not to park with the car facing uphill. Cold or rain seems to affect it more if the front's exposed. OOeer missus Not allowed to put mine in the garage as the wife's is in there.

I get exactly the same mate.
I also found parking in front of the fence helps.
I was running a Performance Subaru induction kit (apprantly doesnt blow your MAF sensor) and found I had the problem, I put the air box back on and found it a bit better, but sometimes its take a little bit to get going.
When the car's in for a service I'm gonna get all the sensors checked.
Thanks
Dan.
If you have any luck please let me know
Thanks again

Three month old 02 WRX and mine does the same every now and again - always fires on the second attempt though with a little extra turning over.
Just figured it was a Scooby thing - time to worry when you keep cranking the engine over and it doesn't fire into life.

Mine did exactly same this morning: cold morning but car garaged. MY02, turned over for about 10 seconds before spluttering to life. Only done this twice before, always in cold weather. Previous MY99 did same very occasionally so have never bothered about it. Will worry even less now I have read this thread and see it as a "they all do that sir" feature

I had my battery go flat and drop a cell, maybe your battery is on the way out.
Its annoying cos I always pray to the car gods for the bitch to start.
i've found switching the key to the setting just before fire up (if you understand) waiting for abotu 2/3 seconds (you can hear sometime moving then stop(And no its not the electric ariel )) then fire it up.
Touch wood, its been ok recently.
Cheers

As danny just said I've found that turning the ignition on waiting for two to three seconds, you sometimes hear what I think is the fuel pump pressurising the system followed by a relay clicking in the dash somewhere and then turning the key to start and it fires up every time. In the past I think it's just been my impatience that has caused the car to not start first time, turning the key too soon. Mines a MY00 by the way.

Nope - I'm sure that's not it. I always wait for the "noises" to finish - it's a bit like waiting for your modem to shut up before playing on the internet!
When I have the problem (I re-iterate that it's rare), I don't stop turning 'til it fires - usually about 5 seconds (which is quite a long time). But towards the end of that time, it's trying to fire; It "feels" like its flooded.

Got the car back now, and the problem may have been solved. Tileys my local dealer spoke to Subaru support and they think that they have the solution.
Excuse the Leyman terminology but this is a bit technical for me. Apparently when the engine is shut down the flap on the throttle body can remain open so when you start your car and the ECU is reset this flap being open will not allow the choke operate properly and so the car shuts down. I think I have got this all right!
Anyway it has been explained to me that to over come this follow a simple procedure.
1.Jump in
2.turn key to ignition stage
3.Blip the throttle- this reset the flap and the ECU
4. Start the car...
And hey presto! Well it work for me anyway. I am sure it wont help everyone but it has helped me when the problem occurred this morning.
Best of Luck everyone

So turn the key to the position before fire up (another crap laymans term), press the throttle once, and then fire the old girl up.
Right, I think i've got it, i'll let you guys know how I get on.
Cheers chaps.

I´ve had this problem too. Happened about 8 times in 12000 km´s. It´s a MY01 and I bought it 5 months ago. Car is garaged, so nothing with rain or cold temperatures to do. Will try to blip the throttle and report back if this helps.

Well I have had this problem a couple of times since my last post and it seems to work.
I have found that you must depress the pedal right down and then try to start the car. It has on one occasion failed to start but i just repeated the process (be sure to turn the key all the way back to 'start position'
Has it worked for anybody else?
