Hi Folks, Just washed and cleaned me motor took it out for a spin and when revs get over about 3500rpm getting near full boost i guess i can hear a sort of rattle noise it isn't affecting the boost or performance just sounds a bit strange, thought some of you experts may have an idea what it could be.

Cheers James.

James

It could be something simple like a manifold heatshield or it could be the start of a big end failure, hard to tell from your description.

If you have a friend who is a mechanic, ask him to come round and have a look/listen.

Avoid driving the car until you know its safe.

Question

Does it sound like "a penny being bounced around in a empty can" ?

Very similar to that yes Gareth, it isn't that easy to hear best on small lanes where it is quiet (no other road noise) and where the hedgerows are to amplify the sound. No drop in performanc3e at all.

Again, in my limited experiance. It's when there isn't enought fuel going in, or the timing is out. This is usually when the boost is too high for the cpu to adjust or there is a mecanical problem. I'm sure there is a better explaination, do a search for "DET"

Hope this helps.

I've been watching this thread with interest as I have a similar rattling sound (more like a fluttering sound) when I give it some boost. No loss of power that I can tell. I tried to record the sound but the noise of the engine drowns it out on the recording so I can't post it

Where do I find the heatshields to check them and can I tighten them myself or remove them to see if that's the problem and then put them back? MY02 Sti7, no mods.

Mine started to rattle some weeks after i had a downpipe installed
and it was caused by the heatsheild not being cut enough and was touching the pipe itself, the next time i got any sort of noise it had blown the up-pipe gasket which started off quiet and got slowly louder over a couple of days.
On the noise of DET i bet you most honest owners would never know what it sounded like anyway.
I hope he responds to the thread when he finds out what it was (my money still isnt on DET)

Sti-Frenchie,

Hmmm, I had / have this on my My02 Sti, which has shown up on a recent rolling road I did. It was "detting" at 5000 rpm. I took it into my dealer who couldn't find a problem. They then contacted Subaru UK which in turn have told me to run it on a few tanks of Optimax and then bring it back for some more testing. That's where I am now. This weekend i'm off to the rolling road again to see if the fuel has made any difference.

Hope this helps

Bet you it is a couple of 5 or 2p pieces caught in you gear shift gaiter on the blind side (Passenger) You look down, you can't see it and assume it's coming from behind the dash/engine bay. That's what my "det" turned out to be

I used to put loose change on the little flat space infront of the gear stick, fine for pottering round town, as soon as you boot it, the coins slip into the Gaiter. One minute it's fine, the next thing, there's a strange mettallic rattle at a certain point in the rev range, sound familiar?

If it is det, then i'm never washing my car again

IMHO

Gareth, I've been using 98 RON since day one and this didn't start until about 6 weeks after I'd had the car. I ran it in carefully too.

Mikey, I thought you were on to something there, I really did. I had some coins in the car but all that remained was a one Euro-cent piece. Removed it...noise is still there.

I get the impression it's coming from the air con vent on the passenger side so I had a fiddle with it and got the noise to be a little less loud (might be cos I closed the vent, I can't see it in the dark). I'll have a proper fiddle with it tomorrow when I can see what I'm doing

Sounds like every time I power on the turbo, something is opening and closing *really* fast and letting air out. It's not a loud sound but it's bugging the hell out of me! Sorry for the non-technical description but I'm not mechanically-enabled

I hope this isn't a hijack of the thread, but just this evening my MY00 has *also* developed a noise. It's like a dull electrical buzz, exactly like a vibrating mobile phone on a table, and comes in (as far as I can tell) as soon as you hit (ahem) 150 km/h, and goes away when you drop below that number. It seems to be coming from the centre console, and is clear and loud enough to be heard over the CD player. This isn't the first time I've ventured into this part of the speedo by some way, so I'd have noticed it before if it was something 'standard'.

Any suggestions?
