speedo gone mad
#1
any body had this happen,my needle on the speedo started sticking, then after a minute or two it would move.last night it stopped then shot up to about 120 mph (not my speed)stuck for a bit then went right round,so now it is stuck behind the pin that stops it from dropping below 0 mph.is this easy to fix or is it a new one.any help would be great thanks. my98 turbo .

It was a WRX STI4 import (1998) and it cost £400 fitted including VAT. I believe the biggest problem was sourcing the head unit (as it's an import), but it's a bit of a pain to fit apparently and I had to have a £50 converter box fitted, so more like £200-£250 for you I'd expect.

I had extactly the same prob on a 98 UK car. Took it to the dealer and they replaced it straight away and tried to charge me lots (can't remember how much!)
Thank God for that extended warrenty I had just bought!
Sorry not much help to you fella but atleast it sounds like a common fault on the 98s - might get you some leverage with the price.

I also have this problem on my UK 98.
Last week it went for the 2nd time so i took the clocks out buy 1st removing the 2 screws at the top of the black plastic surround and then pulling it out of the two clips at the bottom.
Then remove the 4 screws holding the clocks in....pull the clocks towards you and unclip the 3 pluge that are in the back and pull the clocks out of the dash..this takes some doing as its a tight fit around the steering wheel.
Once the clocks are out you can unclip the clear plastic and the black plastic surround so you can get to the needle and put it back over the pin.
I undid all the screws on the back of the unit and the speedo and rev counter part came out but there wasnt much to play with in there.
I did notice that the screws make contact with the printed circuit on the back and the circuit for the clocks inside, so when i put the screws back in i first made sure all the contacts on the printed circuit on the back were clean with a small piece of emery cloth.
Fitting is just the reverse of removing doh.
Touch wood mine has been ok since.
