Question

I'm thinking of getting a knocklink and sensor as the next stage in the tuning process. Do I actually require the extra sensor, or can the factory one be used? The Scoobymania site seems to think you can use the existing one.

Will the use of a knocklink allow further tuning (when coupled with other mods) in terms of boost pressure? Are their any further advantages other than monitoring the state of the engine?

You can use the factory sensor, but it makes more sense (and is worth the cost) to get a seperate one. Probably one of its most critical functions is that if the factory knock sensor is broken, you know there's a problem & lift that foot (the ECU won't be retarding as it doesn't know there's a problem!). Never heard of a knock sensor stopping working, but JBs factory one stopped paying attention to knock because of a non-standard exhaust manifold.
A sensible thing to have on a standard car, virtually a must on one with any mods!
(it's my favourite flashy light)

Hmm... thought I'd better add to that - it's my favourite non-flashy light, really

Nom just to add that the knock sensor went after 65'000 miles on my old my 96. It through a code and went into limp mode with no boost. I still agree though best use a seperate one.

Question

Nom,
Thanks for the advice, I was erring towards a seperate sensor anyway. When you say it is invaluable for a modded car, has it helped you up boost/fuel levels/advance ignition knowing no knock is present?

Cheers,

Guys never use the factory sensor, piggybacking that changes the impedance that the ecu sees and it gets incorrect readings.

Leeroy - nope, it hasn't let me do anything clever like that Well, I suppose it would if I knew what I was doing , but I don't, so it doesn't... I just keep an eye on the blinky light!

Nice one Nom, better to be safe than sorry! I just wondered if monitoring knock allowed any further tuning advances, as i am always in the quest for more power!
