The car to run smoother (well its seems that way) or is it just my imagination?
Got me an STi 7 BB for my WRX01, not for power gains or sound it just looks much better than the standard twin pea-shooter.
is it me? or will the Sti box give a slight power increase?

If you look at the standard backbox, the flow is horrible! IIRC, it causes nearly 3psi extra backpressure compared to a good straight through system, removing some of that has to help. For the one day I ran just the backbox on my MY02, it defo pulled harder from about 4500 upwards.
You'll get a lot better bonus with a downpipe, up-pipe, remap, ported headers, injectors, fuel pump, intercooler, new turbo . . . .

but its a hire car so i have to keep it standard, hence the Official Subaru Back box. plus if this mod becomes a warranty issue 'they can kiss my hairy A**'
