Replacing/strengthening of threads.
See Hillcliff or
Emhart

Don't worry, until a month ago I'd never heard of it either.

Thumbs up

Just had the wife's Golf helicoiled in Blackburn Lancashire , but can't remember the company name. I'll dig out the reciept if you are interested, but post your thoughts before I demolish the house looking for it.

Thanks, looking for a place that has done an actual Subaru block though. They seem to have unique challenges.

Try speaking to Andy at HT Howards 01753 525549. He is a very competent auto engineer (and a mate of mine) Tell him I sent you.

Thanks Stuart, do you know offhand if he has actually done a Subaru block?

He's had his hands on my block (though he didn't helicoil it) and has been working as an auto engineer since leaving school 20 years ago, so I am sure he will be able to help, if not he can probably point you to someone who can.

I think a lots depends on exactly what bit you want helicoiled, and whether you need it done in-situ (very tricky as very tight for access) or with the engine out of the car

Stephen, not sure I follow you - the bolt holes to be helicoiled, what else is there? Block out of engine bay so that's not a problem.

Try Rob Walker Engineering on 01608 645666. They are in Chipping Norton, Oxon. They do a lot of Prodrive engine block/cyl head repairs. I have used them myself and they are very good.

Wink

If you have any trouble finding somewhere try the local Engineering workshops, they would be able to rattle that off on a mill all nice and square! Should not be exspensive either would take mins for each hole.

Swan...

Yeh! When i got my car last week, after i'd had it a few days, I gave it a spankin one afternoon and it hesitated at high revs.
Anyways...cause of this was eventually put down to MOST LIKELY being the plugs (Knackered or incorrect gapping).
I took the first one out (By the airbox) Looked ok-ish, but thought I'd get new set anyways!
Went to take out the one next to it, and it just went round and round for ages (Like 10 minutes) without coming out! It wouldn't do up either!
So i put it back together until I can find someone local to do it for me!

blitz imp reza - problem as I understand it was a tool to do the helicoiling part due to the threads being at the bottom of the block.
JonnyT - had anyone take a look yet? Seems odd...

Buy a helicoil kit(comes with drill bits/tool/coils) should be able to get one from a decent hardware/fasteners store. Not sure of cost? will be cheaper than a new block though! The tool used for winding the helicoil in can be extended. just cut off the handle bit that gets in the way and weld on an extended handle that will clear the block.Any half decent engineering place should be able to manage that.
Sorry about previous reply was not thinking about how far down the tool has to go.doh!
Can't think off any other way, unless someone has already made up a tool like this to reach? drop me an email if you have any questions

Thanks, appears the engineering place was inept and lacked basic imagination.
