What happened?!

I've got a '94 Legacy GT.
Everything was fine as I approached the M40 and then noticed my speedo wasn't working - it's been playing up for a while (going 'vague' at over 80) so I thought nothing of it.
As I went to overtake a lorry on the slip road on to the Motorway,hit the powerband for the second turbo, floored itand it just died, picked up, died, picked up etc. 'Check Engine' light came on. Backed off to about 3K and seriously thought about pulling over rather than limping home.
5 Minutes later, speedo starts to work again,'Check Engine' light goes out, so for some reason, I thought I'd risk putting my foot down....everything's fine!
Any ideas? The only thing that could be different is there may be a slight knocking soming from the centre pipe - although only having had the car for a week, it may have always been there.
