Im just about to have the TD04 in my 94WRX wagon changed for a TD05. Is there anything other than the turbo itself that has to be changed (oil and water pipes?). Is it just a straight swap?

Could need a bit of a remap, boost could fluctuate a bit wildly. See Mr Wallis!

lol... He got my e-mail about a remap last night. cheers.

It's really just the fitting of the turbo i'm worried about at the mo. It's being done in a garage but i was just wanting to make sure that i don't have get any other parts to fit the TD05.

Would not have thought so. Assuming they are both the same entry points (front or 90degree) then you should be ok!

They're both 90 degree entry so hopefully it's just a straight swap. Was just a bit concerned in case the garage come back and said i need to order different oil pipes or something. I don't wanna be stuck driving the pug 106 for any longer than i have to.

Was the td04 ever fitted with a 90 degree entry? I thought (but don't know!) they were all 05's....

The original turbo on your WRX should have been a TD05 and not a TD04.
As with early uk cars (these ran a TD05), the TD04 wasnt introduced on an Impreza until MY97.
If your car has a TD04 then i would be very surprised to say the least

Some early model jap cars had TD04's, and given that i have never heard of one or seen one with the inlet pipe going under the inlet manifold like on the post97 cars, i am assuming it is a 90 degree inlet.

Stand to be corrected though!

Tony, I thought the same thing. I checked mine expecting to see a TD05 but there was a 90 degree entry TD04 under the bonnet. A few others have confirmed that their early WRX wagons also have the 90 degree TD04. I think thats the main reason the early wagons were down on power compared to the same year saloon.

Oil pipe could be a different size... doubt it though...

The VF11 and TD05 are definitely different.

found this on another thread in drivetrain from Pavlo

If it's a tdo5 then the water feet fittings on the turbo will have 19mm AF hex heads, if they are 17, then it's a either a td04 with an elbow, or a VF turbo.
Anyone know if this refers to just the bolt head size or if the thread is different too? Pavlo.. you lurking around anywhere?

AFAIK the td05 has M14 (fine) banjo bolts with 19mm hex heads. TD04 and VF have M12 (fine) banjo bolts with 17mm hex heads.

Not interchangeable.

What I did was to get some m14 hydaulic banjo fittings from Pirtek and braze a set of pipes from a VF.

You might actually get away with drilling your current pipes and just fitting the larger bolts and washers

cheers for the info Pavlo...

not exactly what i was hoping to hear though. The work is being done at a garage under warranty (managed to talk him into fitting the TD05 instead of the TD04). Kinda leaves me in a sticky situation now. I don't think the guy in the garage will be to keen on drilling the pipes cuz the car and the new turbo are warrantied so the car should really remain standard (had a hard enough time convincing him to get the TD05).

Anyone got any ideas? Car goes into the garage tomorrow so it's gotta be something i can do/buy very quickly.

many td05 turbos come with the water pipes fitted, so do check.

I got spare pipes to braze from Townend (they were supposed to be pukka td05 pipes, urrrgh) and the finished job is fine I think.

Got this from the search. Think is was annointed who did the same swap on the same car and didn't have to change anything.

ZERO modification involved, it was a direct swap, as the TD04 was the stock turbo on the jdm '94 WRX wagon, and it swaps with other early WRX TD05's.
Is it possible that the early elbowed TD04s had the same water pipe fitting as the TD05s? Guess i'll just have to wait for the irrate phone call from the garage moaning that i got the wrong turbo. oh well... fingers crossed wouldn't mind some shiny new pipes to go with the shiny new turbo.

Oh... while i'm here.... got a boost gauge turning up tomorrow. Do the early WRXs have the same port in the intake manifold to plumb in the pipework as the later model cars or will i need a T-piece?

I doubt they have the same water fittings. However, more often than not they come with water fittings, in which case it will be a straight swap.

Oil fittings are the same, exhaust flanges are the same.

To add, the early cars have a 1/8" NPT fitting on drivers side if you want to add a boost gauge, if the fitting isn't suitable, or stuck fast (mole grips work well to remove), tee off near to the manifold.

Just called the garage to see how they were getting on. They said they can't fit the TD05. They've decided to "recondition" the old TD04. The problem was cracked fins on the compressor wheel so they are going to replace the wheel and i can get the car back tomorrow. Doesn't the turbo need rebalanced if they do this??? I doubt the (local) garage have the right facilities to properly recondition a turbo.

Any thoughts?

WTF, it has to be tested fully, balanced and everything. Why wont they put the TD05 on it?

Thats what i thought.

I'll try asking the garage if i can buy/beg/borrow/steal the TD05 from them (the one that supposedly doesn't fit) and just fit it myself.

Worst case, the reconditioned one will still be warrantied so i'll just make sure it ***** itself then claim against the warranty again for a new turbo. You got a map that'll wreck a dodgy TD04??

P20SPD, The guy didn't say (It wasn't the mechanic i spoke to), but i guess it would be because of the water pipes. I'm gonna get details tomorrow and hopefully get the TD05 off him too. It might just be the garage getting edgy about the warranty company finding out about them fitting a bigger turbo. I'll just fit it myself when i get the car back. It's not cost me anything so i'm not bothered for now. As long as i can get a TD05 on it by the time Well Lane come round again I don't wanna end up with the "most gutless car of the day" award.

K... i finally got the full story on my turbo. The turbo that warranty company sent out was indeed the wrong one (not the TD05 i asked for or a td04 that was originally fitted)... I spoke to the mechanic this morning and he doesn't even know what it's for but he know's it's not a scoob turbo.

As for the recon on my old turbo, that was just the guy i spoke to getting the wrong end of the stick. The turbo i'm getting is a reconditioned TD04 that the mechanic ordered for me yesterday and will be fitted on Monday.

This brings me to me next question. Now that my 'free' td04 -> td05 swap has gone t1ts up, whats the best way to get more from the td04. Should i go for a remap or a bleed valve/dawes or both? If a remap is called for, David, do you have a map for a td04 running at 14.5psi that'll suit?

The best way is to possibly get a td05 s/h and sell the newly reconn'd td04 to pay for it.

Not sure any maps have surfaced for a td04 based pre97 car. Although the boost maps from the later cars may be a starting point. Either way, it's something that wont happed overnight, especially as the fuelling and ignition are likely to be different.

Oh well.....

Sounds like a bit too much more hassle, guess that settles it then. I'd best just keep the scoob till the warranty runs out, get it looking and sounding nice then sell it and go for a supra or 300ZX It's really the excuse i've been looking for
