Question

Just bought some new wheels, which weigh in at 7.5kg each. My standard ones are approx 11.5kg. I know that reducing unsprung weight is good and some of the reasons why. Question is, what actual benefits will I get from this change?

Edited to say, I know that every 5kg saved is the equivalent to 1 extra bhp (IIRC). What is the multiplier when going from unsprung to sprung, as I assume that there is. eg 1kg unsprung weight is the equivalent to 3kg sprung weight. Thanks

if i remember correctly the idea is that unsprung weight is just that

unsprung so its affected directly by the road and also due to inertia will make the wheels slower at following any rise or fall in the road surface. howver unsprung weight can be used to advantage. the original group b toyota celca (rwd) rally car had an old fashioned "live" axle like an rwd escort and they actually weighted the axle to force it down heavier whilst still allowing thebody movement to be tighty contolled.

weight ina hub/ driveshaft/wheel / tyre has even more effect as it is spinning / has to be spun. consequently you get gyro effects when you try to make them change direction and also the weight has to be accelerated / decelerated like a heavy flywheel which uses more power
