Question

How long/how many miles should the average turbo last? I have been told to let the car idle for 30 secs after driving also, so why is that? Apologies if these are stupid questions - beginner i'm afraid.

Due to the high speed the turbo main shaft runs at, it does need some "sympathy" to enable the engine oil system to , firstly, pressurise the bearings, and then, when about to switch off, allow the excess heat to be absorbed into the oil and also the turbo shaft to slow down, whilst still with oil running pressure.
Failure to adhere to the above, will shorten the turbo life considerably.
You cant really give a "life span" to a turbo, or an engine come to that. It is down to driver operation and care. If you use and abuse, then its not going to last.

So, when starting up, let the engine idle for a minute or so,to equalise the oil system. Then when shutting down, allow at least 2 mins prior to switching engine off.

A turbo-timer either works manually (keeps the engine running for a set time after switch-off) or auto (pays attention to how you drive & then adjusts accordingly). Both wire into the ignition so override you switching the engine off, but should have a 'safety' on the handbrake, so the engine does switch off if the handbrake is released.
£130ish I think for the TTs. Easy to fit DIY - just have a few plasters about to help your fingers with the 'quality' scoob dash

A replacement turbo won't cost you much as long as you don't want to upgrade. I've seen the stock turbo's for $400(US), but if it's blown why not upgrade A IHI turbo starts around $900 (US).
