It's effectively a microphone that bolts to the engine block and detects pre-ignition of fuel AKA detonation AKA pinking, and displays the levels detected through a 5 light display unit that is mounted inside the car, bottom two green lights are normal, usually only bottom light is on, middle tow orange are caution and red is danger. Det/preignition results from the fuel combusting or exploding in the cylinder before it should and sending a shock wave back down the conrod as well as chewing a hole in your piston, and can be caused by poor quality fuel or poor air fuel mix ( ie running lean). Persistent detonation equals a dead engine.

So the Knocklink doesn't do anything in terms of controlling the engine etc , it just detects and displays when bad things are happening and allows you to drive accordingly, ie take your foot off the loud pedal or add better fuel plus octane booster or get the car remapped.

Why not go for the pre-mapped chip on sale in scoobyshop? David Wallis (look for his posts in Drivetrain) sells it I think.

Try Scott Taylor - in conjuction with the said David Wallis. My ECU going to him tomorrow for a 16.5 psi remap (MY95 WRX, Z4 ECU) - £82.50 all in.
