Yup 5w40 is ok for a scoob

Most people use 15w50 rated though (Motul 300V or Mobil1 Motorsport) or a 10w60 (Castrol RS) for your future reference

Thumbs up

15/50 will sort it out,the oil is too thin and is draining out of your lifters!

Out of interest I have 2 Subaru main dealers closeby here in the sunny west, one dealer uses Castrol GTX Magnatec 10W40 semi-synthetic and the other uses BP Visco 5W40 synthetic for servicing Scoobies. I guess as long as the manufacturers spec is met the dealers do a bulk buy deal with whoever they can a good deal off...

For an older Legacy a winter weight of 10 is the way to go. 10-40 seems to be a good balance.

My legacy has done 108,000 miles, and its rather tappety. The ultimate fix is a pair of impreza heads, as the design is differnent. However, 15/50 oil was in improvement, and I've also put in some Wynns "hydraulic follower additive" which was recommended on here as working well over a period of time.

I use mobil 1 motorosport oil, but mainly because I have plenty spare to just buy 4l cans now. I would be interested to hear about the performance of Vavlolene 15/50 synthetic too, as it's way cheaper, however, I'm happy to spend a little more on oil anyway.

Anyone else use Shell Helix Ultra, as that's what the garage is putting in mine, seems ok.

Any good or bad points to this stuff?

Can I be cheeky and say.....

Only 4.5litres not 5.2litres!!

I did an oil change in my Impreza at the weekend and used 15W50 Mobil 1 Motorsport, mainly because I could buy it over the counter at 7:55pm..

Car has been nice a smooth and less tapity since.

SeepyScoob,

I have only just started servicing my car myself and previously it has been running on Shell Helix (semi symthetic) not sure if the Ultra or not though.. for some of the services..

I have had it serviced at a few different dealers and the oil seems to be different each time.. 110,000miles and all okay.. <touching wood, rubbing wood and crossing fingers>

So although it might not be one of the top ones people recommend my car didn't seem to mind it, but who knows if it did any extra wear?

Definitly better now mobil 1 in but compared to oil that has done 7500miles it would be.
