A few weeks ago I put some Rain-X on my windscreen and its pretty impressive above about 50mph, the rain just beads up and runs off, hardly need to use the wipers ... BUT I find around town at low speeds the Rain-X cause the screen to be very smeary .

This outweights the benefits at higher speeds so I want to remove the coating... has anyone found anything that will remove the Rain-X coating ?

I have had this problem myself. I did solve it (for me anyway). I found that if it is not applied to super clean glass, smearing will occur. When i say super clean, i mean that i clean the glass with Auto Glym, two or three times. Each time i go to arm acheing lengths to ensure its squeeky clean.
On the Rain x bottle it says go over the screen twice (or sommat), to ensure uniform coverage. I never do this because i found this also gives the smear. I think one average coat per month works just fine with no smear.
Just a final note on the buffing, after application. I also make my arm ache here, checking the screen from a variaty of angles to make sure the buffing is perfect. I think the ten minute ache every month is more than worth it.
Hope this helps

Or you could get half the benefit and just do the side/rear windows and mirrors with it. That's what I did last time - helps when it's frosty

I think Halfords sell some glass cleaner to get this stuff off.

I've only just started using Rain-X and avoided the windscreen because peeps have mentioned smearing - but it's great all around the other windows/mirrors and I rub some on the windscreen where the wipers don't go.

Some good advice here for applying Rain-X. I think it is great stuff, but you do have to be careful when you put the stuff on. Other things to look out for are grease / oil deposits that build up on your wiper blades. Clean them thoroughly with washing up liquid. Also, using the Rain-X screen wash additive helps to reduce smearing.

The benefit of hugely improved vision at mid to high speeds far outweighs the slight downside of smearing you can get at low speeds.

It's an absolute pig to get off. I've tried halford cleaner, RainX remover, Wax Wizard Cleaner neat screenwash everything!

The last advice I had was to try the cleaning fluid used by jewellers as it's quite heavy duty. Haven't tried that yet.

Otherwise I may resort to a brick and get the damn screen replaced.

Halfords do a glass cutting compound, or something like that, which comes with it's own applicator cloth. I reckon that might do the trick.

never again will i put that crap on. Did last winter and that was the biggest mistake ever.

After it started to wear off to the point where I really needed to use my wipers again there was enough Rain-X still on the screen to make my wipers jump around, not really wiping.

Annoying!!

Thinners should get it off, just keep it away from the paintwork

I have heard that white spirit gets it off, also nail polish remover apparantly.

Rubbing compound (for excess) paint removal, was the most efficient way of getting rid of the stuff from my windscreen. Tried lots of different chemicals, but without success.

The rubbing compound is probably very similar to the Autoglym glass polish, in that it's an abrasive compound, but rubbing compound (the stuff I had lying about), had a high ammonium content.

Still took about 20 minutes to do the whole windscreen. Found out that the screen was now a lot clearer when driving at night as well. The stuff seemed to give the windscreen a very slightly misted up effect when driving in the dark, and you would get a halo effect around streetlamps etc.

I found Auto-Glyms FastGlass got it off a treat.

Or you could get a 'stone-chip' and have a new windscreen fitted by your insurance company

Just stay above 110mph on gravel! lol
