Funny "grasshopper" noise from engine
#1
Recently a very specific noise has appeared coming from my engine. It occurs on decelleration at 3200-3300 revs and sounds like a grasshopper. This may sound like a wierd comparison but it is all I can think of to describe the sound. The car still feels perfectly normal and I'm just going to live with the noise until December when I get my car serviced, unless a noticable change starts occuring. Does anybody know what this noise can be??
Cheers,
King RA.

Heh bet you you're talking about the heat shield rattle. I've got it too and no, its not detrimental in any way but your sanity. It does me head in too. Just can't find the time to sort it out.

I dunno, it only happens on decelleration in a very specific rev range. I'd imagine a heatshield would rattle in a much more unspecific way. As much as it sounds like a grasshopper it doesn't sound like a heatshield rattle. Cheers anyway, may be worth an investigation.

Yup around 2-3k right? Thats when it happens for me as it coincides with the natural frequency of the material. I knew this engineering course would come in handy one day.

I have it on a my99! Only ever seem to get it in traffic (rolling speed), at the same point on the way home from work! I thought it was a field infested with grasshoppers, or somewhere around the window
I will check the heat shield...

Snap: mine rattles too.
Only at about 3100rpms, and makes a sort of grasshoppery kind of jingle-ingle-glingle kind of noise. You will probably notice it if you try and accelerate at too low revs in too low a gear!
I am not fixing mine until I next take the Charge-Cooler off.....so up-pipe and down-pipe time..........

I thought that the noise on my MY01 was the same (heatshield) .After 2 trips to the dealer it now is proven the Grasshopper noise isnt the heatsheild its the turbo waste gate rattling against the turbo housing.
It only does the noise when i build boost 0.1 bar and is gone by 0.2 bar and i'm now waiting for a complete turbo under warranty to cure this annoying noise.

The point for our case was that it only happens at a certain rev, not boost related, and mostly when you decellerate right guys? I'm selling my baby WRX anyway so I might as well not bother as I've seen something I like.
Steve, good luck not shearing the bolts for the uppipe. Some *unts actually overtightened mine. Had to get a new bolt the first time I changed it.

I agree it only happens at a certain rev range but mine is lower at 2700 but i can pin point the exact time because of my boost gauge,3100 rev seems about right for a standard car.And its not the heatsheild rattling.

Possibly totally unrelated but had exactly that "grasshopper" like noise on another car - not a Subaru. Intermittent usually at or just above engine idle speed. Maybe at higher engine speeds too but drowned by other noises then. Turned out to be a worn bearing in the power steering pump on a high mileage car. Easily rectified.

Grasshopper noise...?
Does it make boing.'.ka-boing.'.ka-boing.'.like a grashopper jumping.
Or tsjikky-tsjikky-tsjikky, like a grasshopper flying?
Or squeek, squeek, squeek like grashoppers mating?

Mine is squeaky....kind of bearingy...knocky..wastegatey sound to be honest, not like heatsheild at all....in fact I have never really worked out whaere it comes from......sort of "wickywickywicky" noise that only manifests itself when accelerating in a high gear at low revs.....and you know what I did to cure it? I shut the window.

You know when you go on a holiday in a hot country and there is that ever present drone of insects (grasshoppers????)in the background. Now capture that noise for 1 second and there is your "grasshopper" noise, but more mechanical like.
