Is it possible to get a replacement compressor wheel for my turbo or does the whole turbo need replaced. I've seen adverts for reconditioning but would they include replacing the wheel? What sort of price am i looking at? Car is a 94 WRX import.

goto Lateral Performance, and phone them, Mark will be able to advise. He has close links with Turbo dynamics, and can tell you what's possible or not.

Essentially it's possible, but if it's broken up, then it may have bent the shaft in the process, in which case it becomes more complicated and you may want to look out for a second hand turbo, which will probably set you back about £150.

Turbo is a TD05h

If I remeber correctly Marty, you have a 5-door WRX MY94, in which case you have the smallet TD04 turbo (like wot I have)

well it looks like the fins are ok... had a look tonight and couldn't see any damage. Checked all the pipework and had the intercooler off and checked ad no sign of where the whistle is coming from. Next check.... Dump valve.

Stephen.. i thought the older WRX had the TD05. Do the wagons have a smaller turbo? I know they're 20 bhp or so down on the saloon but i thought it was just the map that was different.

cheers,

Marty

TD04 only came around in 1997 onwards IIRC, TD05's on all early WRX versions.

Marty - since you were so close to the Turbo, you should have been able to read any markings on it !

My bog standrad MY94 WRX 5-door 220PS definitely has the smaller TD04 turbo.
However early UK 5-doors had the same TD05 as the 4-doors

I'm goin out take the Dump valve off in a few minutes, I'll have a look at the turbo at the same time and see what it is.

Stephen... spot on mate. TD04 right enough. I guess thats why the early wagons have less power but spool quicker.

Sorry about the pic quality... couldn't get much closer

Yup, certainly does. Do you know if the TD04 used in any other car without the elbow. Would be handy to get a compressor housing from one ( since i cant weld as well as David )

David, if you're still looking for an early WRX wagon ECU to download mine is still available. I can bring it over sometime this weekend if you want. Pics of it on the "where is the ecu" thread. If you get a chance to look at it... any idea which one i have?

cheers,

Marty.

get the housing from any MY98 + onwards...

why not fit a td05 if yours is shagged?

Might be getting a spare td05 soon....

David,

If you get a TD05 up for sale i'd definitely take it off your hands. I've checked almost everything i can think of to cure the whistle noise but everything checks out ok... Cleaning the dump valve tonight so i'll see how it goes in the morning. If the whistle is still there then it's time for a new turbo i guess.

Either way... i need a bit more grunt.. without trying to offend anyone with a similar car... this one is gutless over 4200rpm.
