Hi John
To cut a long story short, i've convinced a pal of mine that an ECU upgrade is a safer option than a SuperChip.
He's running an R plate UK Impreza with full stainless exhaust and an induction kit.
What would you recommend? Could you also give an incidation of price?
Kindest regards,
Paul

Sam Elassar could do a Link ECU.
He would get good results from a Dawes manual boost controller also (£35-40) and safer than a Superchip (£500). If he then wants more boost he could run HKS fuel cut defender (£100) which is a safer way to RAISE fuel cut rather than the Superchip which abandons fuel cut completely.
I cannot do anything for pre-MY99 cars.
If he really wants a Superchip he may as well just pull a hose from the MAP sensor and take out a restrictor and flatten the end of it with a nail file Does the same thing and free Not safe though IMHO. (if a car with a 3 port solenoid the method is different not sure if the change was 96 or 97 really I have only played with later cars).

Thanks for that John, i'll get him to call Sam and see what the story is.
If he decides to opt for the Dawes instead, can you recommend anyone nearby to set it up properly?
Cheers,
Paul

Sorry to jump in on your thread..........
John - You mentioned the infamous Dawes Boost MBC however on a recent meet everyone frowned when I suggested the purchase of one. IYHO if they are used sensibly , i.e not pushing boost over 16.5psi are they safe? I have just had a boost gauge fitted and was thinking about having a play with one. I have also heard that the hole needs to be 1.5mm - is this true?
Incidentally I have a MY02 WRX and max boost in 3rd gear at 3,000 revs is currently about 0.9
Thanks and again apols for jumping on the thread

Yes stick to about 1.1 bar. Best if you do the uppipe first on a MY01/02. There is just less experience with them on these models. Need the 1.5mm bleed hole.
Nothing wrong with them at all - just a boost control method. I use one at 22 PSI and but have mods to support that.

So John you are saying that I need the uppipe decatting for the Dawes to work effectively? I have no mods whatsoever but was contemplating Dawes with maybe a centre-decat but for MOT emmisions I wasnt going to bother with the uppipe.

Uppipe cat can overheat with high exhaust gas temperatures. If this occurs it may fragment and be ingested by your turbo, and then bits of turbo could take the engine with them. Safety issue really. Cats are evil especially when they sit before turbos IMHO.
