help!! power sreering noise
#1
My power steering seems to be making a lot of noise even in a straight line. The pitch of the noise rises and falls with engine speed. Have checked fluid level, seems ok.Any ideas much apreciated.

Sounds to me like your fluid needs topping up. The level may look fine, but it's best to top it up, then put steering lock to lock a couple of times, to work it into the system, then check again, you'd be supprised how much fluid it'll take. Also check for leaks from the reservoir, usually a couple of O rings sorts the leaks out.

The o-rings in question seem to be the rubber seal that goes round the neck of the power steering fluid bottle. (The thing that sits on the top of the pump, where you pour the fluid in)

There are 2 O rings, one is on the reservoir, and the other is under the res cradle, which you have to remove 2 bolts to get to it, it creates a seal between the base of the res cradle and the top of the pump.
The steering does get noiser when really warm, especially after a good run on the twisties. Put it on full lock a few times, then check the level(when warm) and top up accordingly.

try pouring in a "power steering treatment", but best to leave untill oil leak from seals fixed, then you wont loose it. It does work to clean the pressure valves and does stop a lot or whirring and groaning from the pump. I use the "forte" one, very good, as they also do products for engine, gearbox and axles/diffs, keeps em all quiet and running right.
