Question

Was speaking to a motorsport buddy of mine at work today about de-cats and emissions etc. and he suggested that by removing the Crankcase Breather in to the air induction this may: -

a) reduce the emission levels as all the crap from the first det would not be dragged back through the chamber again for re-ignition.

b) reduce the temperature of the air induced for ingnition through the turbo (as it would be less the exhaust temperature) - thus more power.

Now I'm no boffin (I just plug the keys in and go!) but anyone got any comments on the idea?

Sweeeeetttttt!

Nice one Ninja - keep us up-to-date M8'ie with any advances - by the way (the answer we're all dying to know), any estimates on power gains?

Cheers,

Shanno

Not necessarily a power gain, its more about not filling the ic and pipework with oil residue

Over time this will 'reduce' power

defo interested since I've always wanted to know which of the breather pipes I can redirect elsewhere because I'm trying to get rid of that plastic resonator box just after the MAF. Does anyone know if I can just run the breather pipes to an oil catch tank and one of those little breather air filters??

The oil collector tank
Is this below the expansion water tank on the left hand side of the engine as you look into the engine bay ?? If it is then I have an oil leak of some sort. Was thinking ot was the rocker cover gasket but if this is the oil collector tank then I need a new gasket for this. Anyone else had this prob. Will post pic l8r.

not too clear about your "oil collector tank" since there isn't one. You're probably experiencing the rocker cover leak. This is simple to fix but bit fiddly. Will cost you about 25 - 30 quid to do yourself + couple of hours.

David, I think rally designs sell one for about 40 quid. Have no idea about the baffle layout if you're making your own tho....

There's a small black rectangular thing sits on top of each rocker cover. Its this that leaking by the looks of things.

that's just the part of the rocker cover of which the breather pipe comes out. Should be able to get gaskets for them. Mine are bit different if memory serves.

Question

Okay Guys,

I may be a bit of a thickie here, but I was wondering why Subaru designed the engine to let the crankcase breather feed in to the air induction in the first place?

Especially if it can (over time) leave an oily residue over the ic and pipework and reduce power???

Yours, quite puzzled by that piece of mechanical excitement sat outside on 4 wheels...

It is a legal emission control requirement, the breathers do not spread oil (or not much) on standard boost engines.

Subaru designed it like that due to emission laws

Helps planet, but fills ic and pipes with oil mist

The answer (maybe) is to feed all breathers into a catch tank...doesnt help planet, but does help ic

Any help ?
