Smells like rotting veg!

All
Not sure if this is a general question ..... move if required.
I've been using the AC quite a bit in the last week. I sometimes get that musty smell when switching it off, but after reading various forums it sounds like a gas re-charge would sort this out.
Anyway ....
Got in the Scoob Sunday morning and noticed what I can only describe as a 'roten veg' or 'smelly dustbin' smell in car! It was so nasty that I really thought I drop something in the car that had gone bad.
Couple of minutes with the fan on clears the smell, but each morning since ... the smell is back ?!?!?
I've checked ....
a) the inside of the car (and had all the mats and boot protectors out) with a 'knit comb' looking for something that might have fallen out of a shopping bag and is roting. Nothing.
b) the air intakes in case somones shoved something in them. Nothing.
c) sniffed all the air vents and carpets for leaking fluids. Nothing.
Help!
Ooooops .... god knows why I put this in Was it you? ... please move it moderator

Your A/C needs servicing basically....
That wonderful smell is bacteria thats growing in your system not quite as bad as the a/c system in Barrow thou but it needs regassing but it also needs to be done properly!
(properly is full vaccum of all gas, leave vaccumed for 15mins or so so that there is no water etc in the system and then they regas) quite straight forward really (cost around 70 quid)

Tony how would regassing the system help ? I thought the system was sealed so you wouldn't get any smell from it ? I'm curious as we get this smell from our car occasionally.

Cheers. I thought as much.
Iwatkins ...
There was a shed load of threads on 're-gasing' a few weeks ago (try the search button) Most Subaru dealers seem not to carry out this job, but theres lots of mobile people out there do :-)
I think the smell comes from the heat exchange unit and not the cooling system. Might be wrong tho.

IW,
yup regassing is whats needed here, basically if done properly (the servicing guy who did my last pug306 gti went though it all with me) told me that the system collects water, this causes bacteria so they totally vaccum all the gas out of the system, this cleans it all, they then re-gas after approx 15mins, it sorts the problems out and makes the car nice and cold
(mine is due as its 2 years old now so service time!)
I think Polar do re-gasses for car a/c units, they can normally come to your workplace etc or even your home, cost me 50 quid last time so should be 60-70 max now.
