I discovered that the sound of my car is very different when I go over 110 mph.

Under this, there is just the quietish wind noise and a little background engine noise. Over 110 (and it's an INSTANT change of noise) and the car sounds very different. Very difficult to describe the new noise, as I didn't hear it for very long!
The gauges show no major changes in anything. (RPM goes up a bit, boost gauge goes up a bit, but still nowhere near full boost)

Is this the aerodynamic limit of the car being hit, or something more sinister about to happen?

MY96 UK tubo BTW.

The standard exhaust note does change a little when you get around 4k rpm, apart from that i dunno what the noise could be?

Could just be that, as that is approx what the RPM was.

Although it sounded a big change. I am probably being over sensitive

Thanks.

The missus was asleep and I was driving on a private road - so no police (there's a good stretch down to my housing estate, as the road isn't council adopted yet )

Not wind noise is it? It happens on my my99 at about 120. It seems the side windows move away from the seals slightly and cause an increased cabin noise.

It could be. Is it a step response to the speed? I don't usually have time to check the door seals at that speed - busy watching the road I can only keep it up there for a few seconds before having to slow down, and then only late at night.

Try this, at speed, put your window down and then back up. The windows due to the wind doesn't sit back in the frame properly. Then when you slow down, when you put your window down again, wait for it to bang back into place !

I think that air gets in the seals at speed.

dnb,
When it happens on my car, it just 'pops' and there you have the increased noise. A bit disconcerting at first but the windows haven't blown out yet! I've kept the car well above that speed and once they've 'popped' they don't seem to get much worse. Either that or I have gone deaf by then.

Looks like I've found the problem then. Thanks!

I was afraid that I was going to lose the engine or the transmission

Windows doing strange things I can live with. I can have fun making them go pop now without thinking of mechanical problems

My damned front windscreen starts making a noise above 90mph, especially in the wind - sounds like a seal on the front window - cheap, tacky cars.........

I got a horendous noise at about that speed from my car. Some dopy passenger had'nt quite shut the passenger window properly. It was a scary sound and made me back off straight away ! So check those windows were shut tight.
