what else needs doing which are safe and affordable to keep up to a wrx?

 

i have similar mods with a dawes @ 264bhp(uk model)....now sell me that headlight for £40

HK - there will be bugger all in it, early WRX's onlyhad 240BHP IIRC and that is based on Jap fuel. Yours will be around 260 with those mods (v similar to my last car) The STi has 280, normal newer WRX's have 260, and 20 hp wont make a lot of difference if you know how to drive it.

Sorry to cast doubt on this, but in my experience, you ain't gonna get anywhere near 260bhp from a standard UK car just with an exhaust and an induction kit. 235 maybe. Prove me wrong, but i've only just got near the 260 mark on my 97 WRX wagon, with an exhaust, filter and a Unichip/Dawes.

When i bought mine, i was excited that it was quoted at 250bhp. I didn't realise what a big difference the UK fuel would make to this output. In fact in standard trim, i reckon my wagon was only putting out something like 210bhp, very similar to a UK car...

Fair point, but there are some very interesting results here even from stock cars.

 

I had a 96 UK turbo (they are bigger don't forget) full magnex decat and K&N cone. It went on a state of the art Bosch RR which was V V accurate. This was verified by a standard car getting v near 215 bhp and an STi on ptimax and booster getting 276 BHP.

Mine got 260 smack on the nose.

Enough proof?

Dawes is ****e and cheap power.

Remember subaru power outputs for standard UK cars are pretty conservative, just as theyre 0-60mph times are

ie phase1 puts out morelike 215bhp and phase2 puts out morelike 225-230bhp as standard.

Big power is available from the UK engines, especially the early ones with the big turbo. I know quite a few UK owners who are well over 300bhp now.

My car (96 UK turbo) currently spits out 331bhp - from a standard 208 and I've not spent as much as you might think on the engine.

This is on standard Turbo, injectors, ECU, internals and intercooler!

Going for FMIC and Link now though to improve flexibility, but it's still a bloody rapid machine that will bum a standard WRX/STi.

Going back to the original question... if you wanted your car to keep up with a new ugly bug wrx, then you just need to get 1 or 2 of your heaviest friends to jump in your car to level the playing field.

An ECU Adaptor may be the answer.... mail me and I'll tell you more.

I'm currently running an MY94 UK and expect the BHP next week to be in the region of 255BHP+, maybe even as much as 270BHP. It's running a modified map via one of our ECU Adaptors.

It ran 233BHP Standard with SS Backbox

I currently have 2 maps available :
Stage 1 @ 13.5psi (approx)
Stage 2 @ 15.5psi (approx)

But the Map data can be yours to play with, once you have the Adaptor to plug the devices into.

IMHO it's much safer than a Bleed or Dawes as you maintain ECU control of fuel cut etc...etc...

Nope... alot of people run more than that using a Dawes Valve.

But to maintain fuel cut using a 2Bar MAP sensor the Max Fuel Cut 'Boost' value you can set is about 17.5psi. Anything above that won't be read by the Map sensor.

Fuelling is good as I also have an AFR fitted.
