I have used my diff in fully locked position on all RR as advised by PE (i was not sure about this eithier at first but was well explained by dave and mervin).
The diff will only be damaged if it is locked while trying to turn as this causes different wheel speed rotation, it is that which causes damage to the diff. This means it is ok to also lock it on the 1/4 mile which i do often and as yet i have not damaged it (just remember to wind it back to fully open when you have finished the run otherwise you car wont turn very well).

Fully locked is best for the type R, least it gets you the best figures.
