Question

Help.
I just tried to start the engine and there wasn't enough juice in the battery to turn her over (lights and stuff still work, but turning her over just gives a click).
I hadn't left any lights on or anything so I assume it's either my battery has given up or an alternator problem.
I've just put a meter on the battery and it's showing 12.3V, but my charger is trying to recharge it anyway.
Is it possible it could have 12V in it but not enough kick to start the engine?
Anyone know how I can easily test for a dead alternator?

Also, doesn't a dead alternator cause one of the diagnostic lights to come up on the dash?

Well I just put enough charge in to turn the car over and get her started. Seems the alternator is fine as it's giving 14.7V on tickover. Battery is just knackered and not holding charge for extended periods, it dipped down to 8.4V on cranking the engine :-(
I called the AA out to get me going. It took them 14 minutes to turn up - I'm amazed they responded so quickly - well done chaps.
Nice AA man has now gone off to get me a new battery. Three cheers for the AA!!
