Starting my car (MY98) from cold, I've noticed recently a quiet, high-pitched whine coming from the engine (I've only noticed it while stationary). I haven't investigated too deeply, but you know the sound that gets made when you rub your finger around the rim of a wine glass - that's pretty much what it sounds like... Seriously!

Any ideas?

Yer tried dippin the clutch ? COuld be the thrust bearins on the way out....

Nope - I didn't try that. I noticed the noise just as was closing up the garage having just got the car out this morning. Bugger. When I think about it I've had an awful lot of problems with this car... :-(

I get this on mine sometimes.
Have no idea as to what it is though.

I get a strange chick type knock sound when left on tick over..
assume it is an engine mount bush that need replacing somewhere..

Not much help to your problem mind..

Does sound like the clutch thrust bearing..

I thought a thrust bearing made a noise when you pressed the clutch, and the bearing was under the pressure ?

I heard the noise this morning when I started up and dipped the clutch - the noise disappeared. Thrust bearing looks likely... :-(

I had my clutch replaced for judder Aug 2001, just at the end of my warranty period (I've got a MY98, warranty expired Sept 2001). As I've had the new clutch in for less than a year, and I've only done 12k miles, what do you reckon my chances are of going back to Subaru and getting them to fix it?

Surely Subaru must provide (at least) a years warranty on this sort of work?
