I've just been told that my battery keeps dying because its not holding charge and that it has been made worse by my new stereo install. What batteries do you guys fit with large installs, i was after something with lifetime warranty and one which can hold a lot of amperage.

Its for a 99 Turbo btw

Best bet is an Optima 'Yellow Top' dry cell deep cycle battery

Here is a small extract from their adverstising speel

""OPTIMA delivers high current at Arctic as well as tropical temperatures. The OPTIMA delivers no less than 800 AMPS at 0 degrees F and as much as 1,100 AMPS at warmer temperatures! In addition, Optima will absorb nearly 100% of the recharge current from alternators and battery chargers.

At DC Battery Specialists, we found that the Optima will consistently deliver 1,100 cranking amps for 25 to 30 seconds. At only 38 pounds this is comparable to batteries 4 times its size and weight. In addition, we are able to recharge this battery faster than any we have tested.

SEALED, VIBRATION RESISTANT, AND LEAK PROOF,
EVEN WHEN BROKEN
In an OPTIMA battery, the lead plates and separator are wound and tightly compressed into a cell tube so they can't move, shed, or break, even in severe shock and vibration applications. In independent SAE tests, the OPTIMA kept working after being subjected to vibrations up to 5G for 12 hours. As in all AGM TECHNOLOGY BATTERIES, there is no "free acid" that can leak out or spill and the OPTIMA can be operated effectively in any position -- even upside down -- without any risk of leaking and because it is sealed, no corrosion can form on the posts, connectors, or cables. ""

Haven't got one yet, but it's next on my very long list!!!!!!

Cheers

Iain

I was told that these were great for putting in the back of a car as an extra but no good for starting the car on because of cranking amps being down.

BTW, where can you buy a wide range of batteries, halfords are useless!

I know of a few people who have them, and they say that their car cranks much quicker. Only going by experience!!

They are normally used on High end car audio systems... I had three in my old pug 106... Wasnt cheap..

They arent necessary in a road car. Just buy a decent bosch battery.. and save your self 190 quid or so.

You dont need 1000 + CCA to start a scoob.

meant to ask what amplifiers you had... and if alternator had been changed.

standard alternator and Infinity RA5004 and Hifonics Son of Boltar, nothing too mad, shouldnt be a problem but they said that the standard alternator was only 50a and that the battery wasnt holding charge!

wouldnt bother with an optima then... just check alternator... possibly source a bigger one... and get a decent battery...

JUst bought me a £50 job from local place, gonna see how it goes in case its a car fault, dont wanna have just spent all that on a battery if it wasnt the battery, whats weird tho is that the voltage on the alternator is different to that of the voltage on the battery, perhaps the wire between the alternator and battery is knackered!

The voltage on the alternator should be exactly the same... try clipping a jump lead between the case of the alternator and the - term on the battery.... if the voltage is then the same then you have a sh1te ground... otherwise its the other wire... what voltage are you seeing with the engine running... should be 13.8 - 14.4 ish...

I'm seeing 14v on the alternator when the car is running with stereo on full blast but only 12.5v on the battery at the same time!
