Over on this side of the pond we had a recall on all the 99 MAF's (just had mine replaced last week) did it effect you on that side too?
Details here at the bottom of the page on our recall.

AFAIK, they've been no recalls over here.
Subaru UK have a habit of either sticking their heads in the sand or blaming the customer for even looking under the bonnet.
It'd be interesting to know if the MAF in the US cars is any different to the UK\European ones.

Here in the US the 99MY has had many problems blowing the MAFs. Particularly if one installed an aftermarket intake. The 99 MAF was of the thin film type rather than a hot wire. There were all sorts of theories as to why they were blowing. Vibration, air pulses coming back through the system and just a bad batch. I knew one owner that went through 3 of them. Costly at 350 USD each. From what I hear, they have replaced the thin film with a hot wire. At the link above I have pictures of the old and new side by side. I can't tell by looking if it is a hot wire type though.

I think it's getting clear to me now why my local Subaru dealer replaced my blown MAF under warranty, even that I had a (bad) induction kit fitted (J&R).
When I asked, how come it goes on the warranty, you don't blame it on the induction kit? they just replied that it had nothing to do with the induction kit, although I'm pretty sure because no brackets were supplied with this kit and the top part of the induction was just resting on the inner side of the wing, getting all vibrations from the body.
I have since then an APEX'i induction fitted and no problems with MAf since then (about 40000km)....

sorry for the delay, i have been away from computers for 2 days!!!
on tuesday evening i disconnected the battery on the car to reset the ecu. whilst replacing the maf, i thought i would clean the air filter and housing and allow to dry over night.
refitted everything on wednesday about 11am, so approx 16 hours between taking battery off.
did not run car until today, approx 50 miles in total.
The car did not seem to be any different to before replacing the MAF!!
Any thoughts?
