Default EJ20 Engine oil leak..

Hi All, mot'd Scoobs today and mechanic noticed an engine oil leak which I've been wiping up for some time now, and he advised me it was more than likely coming from the rear main crank seal as he said it was definitely engine oil. . So, I've been looking on youtube and there's also an 'oil seperator plate' that is a known source of leaks, especially the early plastic ones! Who knew? , Also, something about a piston O ring (not sure it's really called that) but I'm still looking for further info on that. Anyway, just wanted to say thank goodness for youtube and the useful guides. Anyway, bottom line is Scoobs is good(ish) for another 12 months!

The three items you mentioned from right to left (not my description but applicable )
1: Oil separator cover; 2: Crankshaft seal and 3: O-ring for piston pin removal port cover.

depends on the age of the car as they originally used an Ali cover, then went to a plastic type that can turn brittle & crack and then from circa New-age cars went to a pressed steel item.........

all will leak regardless if not fitted / sealed correctly - we always check these 3x items when doing any clutch type job

I see Don's named it 'The Plate of Doom!' ...sounds ominous! I'd better start youtubing up a DIY way of getting the engine out.

no idea why as they generally only give issues when incorrectly installed...........an odd one cracks and some others lose their "seal"..........

Seen on YouTube a plastic plate of doom melted, but that was due to a worn out clutch...
