Default Exhaust choice

Hi all, I know this has been asked to death but a lot of the threads I've been looking at are a few years old now and wanted a more up to date opinion.

I'm looking at effectively retrofitting wr sport style mods to my 97 turbo 2000 and have changed the y pipe and apexi filter. Im now looking at exhausts as my next mod. And I'm stuck between hayward and scott back box and a prodrive/wr sport item.

From what ive read the h&s quality has been hit and miss in recent years is this still the case?

Well if you want WR sport mods why choose hayward and scott back box?

OK perhaps what I should have said was i just want to upgrade y pipe, filter exhaust and a remap.

But would I be better off trying to source a prodrive back box or h&s as I'm starting with neither

I don't want anything silly. I currently have what looks like a DIY backbox at the moment from the previous ownership that has a nice sound level to it. I will have to measure how loud it is to give an idea.

One thing I'm confused about is what was actually changed in regards to a prodrive exhaust on a classic. Was it just back box and centre section or downpipe as well?

ok thanks so the centre pipe was changed. Was it simply to a stainless steel version of the standard pipe or was the resonator/cat removed. Is there a cat in the centre pipe on a classic?

Too be honest I didn't think they changed the Centre pipe, but looks like they did. The Centre pipe on the standard cars had a cat in yes. On other models like P1 and 22b believe it had a decated centre pipe, looks like standard but no cat inside.

As for the Prodrive package I'm not sure, I don't believe it was just a stainless steel straight through pipe, but could be wrong.

so is it quite hard to tell between a standard and prodrive centre pipe just by looking at it fitted on the car? I had a quick look under the car but wasn't sure what the standard centre looks like. Is there a bubble in the pipe for the cat and a 2nd one for the resonator?

Don't know mate, as said the P1 came with a decat that looked just like the standard catted Centre pipe, but just decated. Guessing that could of been the Prodrive version.

Newage Impreza's came with this as part of the kit.

OK thanks I'll keep looking I think my downpipe looks pretty rotten as well at the flange so that might need changing anyway.

Now I'm probably going to open a can of worms here but I'm looking at getting esl fitted so who is the best person to go to for a remap?

So your looking for the standard look?

Depends where you live? I'd go Andy carr, my mate has his Impreza mapped by him with no issues. £650 supplied and fitted and remapped.

Yeah I think so. Trying to keep it fairly sensible, its got 127000 miles on the clock so i dont want to push it too much. If the wr sports had 240-250 thats what id like to aim for.
I'm based in Warwickshire not far from RCM but I don't mind travelling for recommendations.

Andy care maps in Wolverhampton, so your not far away. Although with those miles I'd avoid adding any more power. Of course upto you.

I'd just fit the Prodrive package, ecu, exhaust etc, you will get improved BHP on that.

OK thanks might not bother with the remap then and just change the exhaust. Will it run OK without the centre cat and no remap?

I didn't think prodrive did an my97ecu?

Just had a quick look on ebay does this look to be the right one? Are they really just plug and play?

Based off the listing it says it isn't plug and play due to immobiliser. So all in its about £345, at that stage you might as well look at a remap and do the mods you want.

No there not plug and play, loads of topics on here about it. They need to be codded by Subaru, you can still buy the old machines on ebay that let you code them. Off memory its £35 or £45, i emailed Subaru few years ago to ask. 1999-2000 models are plug and play.

Yeah ive just been reading a few of them by yourself and others. From what I've read ESL can supply the ecu with the standard map and the prodrive map on the ecu anyway at no extra charge. But that was 7 years ago whether they still do I'd have to get in touch. It would save having to get the keys coded.

Yes thats another option aswell. More expensive though, ESL charge £478.80 including VAT, then i think its £10 to ship it out to you. Plus you will have to ship it to them aswell.

**** that's a lot more than it was 7 years ago.
Ill get the exhaust sorted first see how it goes. Am I better off resetting the ecu after I've changed the exhaust? I keep reading contradicting info everywhere but one post said once the 97/98 ecu's retard the ignition from not running super unleaded etc they won't re advance even if you start using sul again. Do you know if there's any truth in that?

It has gone up abit, but the amount on there site doesn't include VAT, until you hit checkout, then shows VAT charges.

Not sure about that, saying that my battery gets discounted in the winter so not noticed anything. Worth a go.

https://www.haywardandscott.com/suba...s-backbox.html

Is that a fairly quiet backbox?
and does anyone know the best place to get a replacement standard downpipe?
https://www.onlineautomotive.co.uk/c...SABEgL60fD_BwE

Anyone had any experience with these?

Not that quiet from what I remember. Wouldn't bother with a standard down pipe, just go sports cat. What do you currently have?

Pretty sure it's just a standard cat. Will a sports cat not cause issues if it isn't remapped after?

Well people will say you need too map any mod. But I've been running a sports cat for years on standard map.

It is, performace wise, Prodrive Y pipe, ecu, full 3" bore system, 100 cell sports cat. Removed Dump Valve, as causing over fuelling.
Mods that need fitting
440 injectors
ESL
Hybrid TD04 turbo
200 cell sports cat
Remap

HI Jay, had the exhaust looked at this week whilst it was on the ramps and the downpipe and centre pipe are rotten. When you say you've ran yours for years on a standard map, how long exactly and is that the standard map on the prodrive ecu not the standard ecu?

FInding genuine downpipes on ebay and they are the same price as spors cats so seems a bit of a kick in the teeth if i was to buy one of those

Thanks
