Hi, So I am in the middle of replacing the timing belt on my 2000 wrx (Bugeye), however the after lining up the marks on the left pulleys, the crank is off the mark by one tooth. See photos. Any ideas on how to make it line up?

Have you considered the timing belt might have the marks printed wrong? If all of the pulleys line up with the marks on the engine I personally wouldn’t worry.

Is it on the right way around? If I recall correctly, there's arrows pointing in the direction that the belt should be running (clockwise).

Also, I don't know where, but there must exist a page somewhere on the internet that details how many teeth of the belt between the different pulleys. If you know this, you can count the number of teeth on yours and know if you're out.

I've done mine several times now, but not in the last 3 years, but I think I had to start at the crank and go clockwise for it all to line up eventually, otherwise I ended up with one tooth out at the end (because it's easy to not stretch the belt enough between the pulleys).

281 teeth on the belt you have to go anti clockwise when putting the belt on to allow the tensioner to take up the slack correctly.

Thanks everyone, managed to line it up pretty well, with the cams lined up the crank was a bit further right then the notch but seems to all be fine
