Default limiting confusion.

HI, I have read a lot of other threads on here but nothing actually answers my exact question so ill put it perfectly here.

I have a 96 Impreza, clocks go to 160mph, reads in mph perfectly, but there is a limiter at 112 mph that I want to get rid of.

I know there are those gearboxes etc, but that would then send my speedo reading out.

In short, with the fact that it's already in mph, how do I go about removing this limiter?

Thanks in advance,
Alex.

Have you tried installing one of these?

Thanks for that, will have a look into it now!
Is this something that will kill the limiter and allow my gauges to function as normal?
Thanks.

That is the idea, yes. Had one of these installed on my GT Four ST205 by Fensport a few years ago and it removed the 180km/h (112mph) limiter alright. It should actually be the same HKS part number that applies to the Impreza too by the looks of it.

Something not adding up here what version is your car and is it an import or a UK car. That speed converter is for a JDM v4 and onwards and your car is borderline.

it’s a 96 turbo, as far as I know it’s a Uk version but there are a lot of things in the car that have been changed around
its running a Z4 ecu if that shines any light on it?
thanks!

Is the vin no 17 digit or 6, the z4 ecu was for an import iirc which would add up. POSSIBLY someone has changed the clocks. So it should be restricted if an import with a z4 ecu. Or maybe a uk car with a z4 ecu transplant.

the VIN is a 17 digit one mate, but the ecu cage cover etc is all missing so I think it’s been changed at some point! Is there anything else where I can tell?

thanks!

By the sounds of it you have a UK car with a z4 ecu transplant which can be done with a bit of pinout swapping. I think your best bet would be to get an ESL board fitted and then map the car. Or get someone with a knowledge of the cars to see what has actually been changed. It's not difficult when its sitting looking at you.

I've been looking various places, and going by what the guy said who had it before me, I reckon it might have had an import engine swap because he reckons it wasn't standard for the car.
I don't suppose you have any info about the engine no and ecu pairing? I can try and look into it that way and if they match, can use the SLD, if they don't, ESL it is!
thanks

If its running and has a z4 ecu which if its limited it probably has I would leave well alone and fit an esl board. You could open a tin of worms re immobiliser issues etc etc. Is it a 3 or 4 plug ecu as late 96 is changeover year.

if it is actually a Z4 and hence 4plug then it has to be MY96 or older

It is a 4 plug yes, so you think I'm better off going down the route of ESL?
thanks

Yes if it's running starting etc ok let sleeping dogs lye and I would personally in your situation fit an esl board and map the limiter out of it. Obviously you have the added advantage of being able to map the whole car as well.

You cant map the limiter out of it if its a 4 plug ecu even using ESL

I suspect somebody has just fitted UK (MPH) dials to a currently limited setup.

you need the gearbox or dial convertor box this is the only way to delimit a cabled setup

well, you never actuaally remove the limiter just move it from 180 kph to 180 mph ( AS IF HUH LOL
