Default Rad fans

Hi all, I wanted to know who long does it take the rad fans on a impreza wrx to come on?

my car is a 2001 wrx bugeye and the fans come on within 6min if running the car. More than half the rad is cold. The fans stay in a long time. Iv replaced the thermostat and burped the system but still the same.

Comes on at around 96*
Sounds like you've an airlock.
Search the forum on how to fill the coolant to avoid airlock.

Its not airlock, iv burped the system but still no good. The fans come on within 6min of car running. I had the car running for about 2 hours yesterday, temp went just above 3/4 and more that half of the rad was cold, the bottom hose was cold. When disconnecting one of the fans it seems ok, as soon as I connect it back then the same problem.

heaters blow hot air when I give it a bit of gas then goes cold again.

Thermostat is new water pump was replaced 3 years ago

Ok it's not an airlock and the subaru system can easily be 'burped'
The forum also has no search function

Its 100% airlocked. The heater matrix is a ******* to unlock. The tell tail sign is a "running water" sound when car is could from the cabin. It can take a competent mechanic to fully bleed an EJ series engine due to the design.

Jack front of car up so radiator cap is highest pint in system. leave cap off overnight to let some air to naturally escape. If the air log is big enough it can be forced to recirculate.

Try and source one of these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/352233953041?ul_noapp=true Anti spill funnel. Heres a video of it in action

I'm going home tonight to rebleed mine after a new radiator install. on a hawkeye coolant capacity is 7.8l and ive pretty much put that in and my temperature averages just above the 1/3 line and in the 30degree summers it never goes past the 1/2

I’m going to re burp the system, is it better to fill the rad first, the using a funnel to fill the header tank via the hose from the turbo.

iv tried searching and can’t find the anything or I’m just too dumb

Read this. Alcazars method is the best way to fill a system. I did mine last week and it worked a treat.

Possibly a clogged rad?

Side note: I recently changed mine and got an airlock. Bottom hose was cold but top one was fine. Squeezed the bottom one a few times with the expansion tank open/funnel in and this did the trick. However, my fans didn't kick in early/engine temp stayed around 1/2 way.

Rad is not clogged. I took it off and put the garden hose on it until clear water came through it.

i did notice that both hoses going to the heater matrix are cold and the hose going to the turbo looks no good and brittle.

im going to replace the water hose going to the turbo and put the garden hose on to one of the hoses to the matrix. Then burp the system following Alcazars steps.
