Guessing this is big ends?
I had my 2.1 rebuilt almost 2 years ago, and for various reasons it never went into the car (lack of time).
Anyway, I eventually fitted it, and everything was hunky dory until an oil hose to the oil cooler blew off.
it happened at a set of traffic lights, so I was just idling, but even though i turned off the engine immediately, I think it's shat itself.
Here's a video of the noise it's making (I'm just looking for someone to confirm if this does indeed sound like rod knock):
I'm totally fed up with the car at the moment, so I've put it up for sale as is, but just looking for opinions. I could probably fix the engine myself, but I will have no time until at least September (due to university...), and I'm not sure I can be bothered anymore.

Hmm, I've checked the (one) plug today, and it's definitely not loose.
Also, been out for a longish drive today, and tbh the noise seems to be less intrusive now that I've come back, so perhaps it's unrelated to rods/bearings.
Are forged engines just noisy sometimes? I don't remember thinking that the "original" 2.1 (the one the pistons, rods and heads came from) sounded loud, but then I only drove it for a couple of weeks in march, and I wouldn't have been listening out for sounds anyway (you can't hear anything from inside the car, it's purely if you stick your head under the bonnet).
It's wiseco stroker pistons and k1 rods.

one thing it could be the cambelt tensioner, they make a tapping noise when knackered, but i still think its tappets, you can find the source of the noise with a long 3/8 extension, 1 end in your ear and the other on various parts you will then hear every noise the engine makes and where it is coming from

Hard to tell from a video but it doesn't sound that horrible to me? I don't think my Type R with a forged stroker sounds better than that before fully warmed up (after driving it).
Sorry to hijack your thread but it's related at least.
I know it's hard to hear over the exhaust but I can hear what I "hope" is piston slap before the engine is fully warm. I could have sworn that the sound wasn't there during the first starts though which is a bit worrying. But my engine isn't even run in yet, I need to do it on a rolling road and get it mapped at the same time.
Here's what the old engine sounded like if you want to hear some knocking

Cheers guys, i had the cam covers off to check the tensioners / pulleys, and I don't think it's them (no bouncing when running.
I think I might just be paranoid - it definitely does not sound like the type r above
Will poke poke about with an extension bar as per madafoobs suggestion - great tip!

when my bottom end went it sounded totally different to yours henrik, as said above it should get louder and faster as the engine revs. my mahle 2618 pistons sound horrible (really tappy) but the car uses no oil at all and is fine so i guess its all down to the piston used and the clearances in the bores
For sure (as has been said) from that video, it doesn't sound like bearing failure. When a big end or crank bearing goes, it's usually pretty catastrophic and for sure you know about it!
I usually get a mono directional pc mic and pair of headphones (and laptop) and point the mic at different parts of the engine to see what is what.

Bring the revs up to 2500 rpm - if the big end bearings are failing, you will hear a distinctive ' big end rattle ' at this rpm and when you let the throttle off from that rpm.
Hopefully just a exhaust gas leak from the headers/up pipe in your case or oil starvation to the top end if you lost a cooler hose
Mick
