Differential poblem
New member and 1st post and I need some advice please,
Car details ..wrx sti prodrive type UK on a 53 plate....full Subaru history ...engine re-build with new clutch and timing belt at 125K from Subaru.mileage is now 142K.
Last couple of months I have noticed that when the car is hot (driving for at least 20 mins) I am getting a knocking/clunking noise from front when turning at low speeds ie parking spaces either going forward or back .Thought it might be CV problem but from reading on here I am convinced it is the centre diff.
Been quoted £2700 from one Subaru garage for the part only!!!
Quoted by another £1600 to supply and fit?? £600 for parts and £1000 labour as gearbox needs to come out apparently?
Do these figures sound reasonable?
Just had gearbox and both diff oil changed by my mechanic and although it seems a bit better , I am sure I need a new centre diff.
I just wanted a bit of expertise on whether I should go ahead with the garage for £1600?
Live in London area so not many Subaru garages about.
Any help would be much appreciated .
Many thanks ....Tony.

Thanks for the quick response mate ....I know what you mean about trying to find parts in London. Will keep my fingers crossed for a solution because I love the car and even though I aint a millionaire I still want to try and resolve it without paying a fortune!!! My pride and joy....gutted!!!

Just to add, mine never made a sound when the car was cold, when it was warm it was a different story.
The non viscous diff is a sealed unit with a special silicone to aid lubrication/internal movement.
Once that silicone starts to break down you need to replace the diff.
They can implode and make a real mess of your box if left too long.
Centre diff failure on the non dccd 6 speed is getting pretty common now.
