Does my oil need changing ?
#1
Could someone please advise me, I've just been sat in a McDonalds drive through for 10 mins, when i set off the engine was knocking at low revvs, or if throttle blipped, after normal driving for about 5 mins the knocking had stopped. The oil was changed 4000 miles ago for fully synthetic, the car is used regular but for short journeys 3.5 miles to work and the same back home (a few more miles at the weekend though)Car has covered 72,000 miles and is MY97 Turbo.
Any help pleez
Thanx in advance Stu.

Stu, if you used a 0W synthetic, then the answer is that you should probably change your oil. Oil this thin when cold is not good for a turbo, especially one that is as advanced in miles as yours. You should be using something which is 10W-40 - I know all the purists will say get a fully synthetic but for normal motoring I'm not convinced it's worth it. Mine has done 102K miles and has run the last 40K energetic miles on Shell/Esso/Duckhams 10W-40 semi-synthetic. This grade mmets the Subaru recommendation anyway.

or you can try Mobil S 10w-40 semi synthetic.
My '98 wagon has done 107,000 kms to date, of which the last 40-50,000 kms were on Mobil S. I would not know if this is available in your vicinity though. Its popularity in Asia is quite recent.

Two things to remember, it takes 5miles to warm up your engine oil to operating temps and dont rag your car withing these 5 miles!
Also does your car sound like a diesel when you start her up for the first few miles?

I know a lot of you run +MY00's with money no object? but my 60K miles service on a humble MY93 will be due in a couple of months. Any problems with a champion filter and Halfors fully synthetic 10-40W for a flush through before switching to the agreed? Motul 5-40W? or another choice?

Katana,
The Brunei government dropped car duties from a maximum of 200% (4.0 litre engines) to just 20% flat for all c.c. engines. Singaporeans pay nearly 4 times more than us for the same car under the new regulation while Malaysians about 2 times more than Brunei. Fuel is monopolised by Shell and the best consumer grade fuel is only 97 RON at roughly 0.21 pence a Litre. Oh, and no income tax, shall I go on ? :-)

Tony T,
would not suggest that you run with anything but a subaru oil filter as its been known to cause serious problems in the past running none subaru items, as for the oil, you mean the 5w40 fully synth? well its made by comma so its not bad stuff (GGR use the same stuff) so id go with that.
Tony
PS, it costs a fortune to run an MY00, trust me, one mod after another

Yup, whichever way you look at it, there are other companies that claim to make compatible filters for the Subaru WRX/STi but with a (very) slight cost difference. I personally don't think it's worth the risk as in the event of a warranty claim for whatever reasons the cause of [engine related] damage is, use of a non genuine filter will always be a suspect.
I've enclosed a pic of the one and only genuine filter from FUJI HEAVY INDUSTRY Japan for those who don't know what it looks like. There's also a part number pictured.

F.A.O. Tony Burns, Got myself a Subaru filter and sump washer for £12.50 and asked the dealers' servicing dept. what oil they use. Magnetec was the reply! Is this right, Halfords seems like virgin P*** compared to the cheapy. I've decided to bring my 60K forward a bit and judging by the recent threads Motul 300V seems the option. Any comments?

As far as I'm aware, Subaru filters are made by Purcolator so there shouldn't be any problem there. Also Coopers filters make a pattern part and they are pretty reputable and have a good non-return valve. I wouldn't trust a Champion in my lawnmower.
For info re Mobil S 10W-40 semi synthetic. Just bought 2 x 5 litres @ about 14 Euros each (£9) from Auchan near Dunkerque.

Jan Shim, how come there aren't many scoobies in KK? Did you import your WRX directly from Japan or is there a dealer there?
Oh yeah UK scoobynetters, if there's one reason to hate these Brunei, Singapore or Malaysian people, is that they pay more than 6 times less than us here in the UK. I wish I can say that I'm exagerrating but I'm not. I know, I'm jelous. I miss those petrol prices while I was living there. My parents are probably laughing at my expense now.
