Default New noise - puckering bum

Had the Scoob 4 weeks, driven it like 3 times due to just working on it, tidying it up etc.

So got the prodrives refurbed and decided to take it out for a blast today, however, I swear the turbo didn't sound as "whiny" as before.

I know it's hard to tell over the Internet, but that sounds a little bit ****ed to me?

Standard vf34/5 and I'm running at around 330hp

Give me the bad news 😟

Sorry dude, sounds like the Turbo is about to give up any time soon..could be an air leak too but you can hear it during Turbo spool up. The VF series are unreliable imo and are prone to cracking at the rear by the waste-gate, leading to catastrophic failure. Don't boot it buddy and get it checked over because if the fins go they will shoot straight into your inter-cooler and possibly engine.

****

I was hoping it would just be a leak somewhere - I've heard of the exhaust end crack - could cause this sound no?

Also, on a completely unrelated note - can anyone recommend a scooby specialist in Yorkshire?

Could be a gasket leak but you have to ask yourself what would make it go make that sound if it was fine before? See if the sound changes over the next few days. My best advice is not to rag it around and no high rpm's. Try get it pressure tested...most places will do this for you so shop about.

Just been thinking - I had the intercooler out prior to this - taking all the salt off it etc.

I had the intercooler on a weelybin - and while working on the car, the intercooler dropped on the concrete floor with a big clang.

Didn't see any damage - but could a micro fracture cause this sound?

Sounds more like a leak to me.

As you had the intercooler off, I would be doubly checking that all the pipes are on securely.

But as the intercooler dropped from quite a height, I would not be surprised if this was the issue, or a combination of both.

Ok so I put a new intercooler on today, new coupler, new gasket for both etc...

And now it's louder than before!

The noise only ever happens at positive pressure, so I can hear the turbo spool separately under 0 psi (the normal faint turbo whistle) and then at anything above 0 this awfull whine comes in (but I can hear the turbo whistle as a separate noise). Seems to be a leak somewhere and not the turbo now? Maybe bov?

Right Guys - all sorted.

Turns out, The bov was not sealing properly to the TMIC, even after I bought a new Bov Gasket. Looks like if I tightend it so far the gasket would warp and break the seal.

New seal on, tourqued up correctly, car is now as it always was but without the noise! Very happy

Nice one only just seen this thread, or i was going to say gasket. I fitted Sti intercooler to mine and had same kind of noise, but sounded more like a duck lol, turned out the to be the y pipe that was connected to the intercooler, i had fitted both gaskets but the one side already had one on, so i'd fitted 2 on one side hence noise.

Lol no quite, the gaskets was that compressed, i tried removing it to fit the new one but couldn't get it off it was almost blended into the intercooler.

Plus rushing the job didn't help
