Default ej20 mods or swap?

Hey guys, first post here, i'm looking at getting a 1996 impreza 5dr hatchback/estate, with my age (21) I can't get anything with a bigger engine and was lucky to find this with insurance so cheap, I'm planning on doing the brakes, suspension and interior before anything on the engine, would it be better swapping the engine out for different one or working on the stock one? Probably after a year when my insurance goes down, if it is a swap I can save up and find a suitable one and get it ready to put in.
BTW I'm a noob with all this so any help would be great also on what parts will fit this model (suspension, brakes etc)
If there are any threads already on with these questions could you put a link in ?
Thanks

Couple of options to consider :
1} Keep the N/A wagon for a couple of years and when your insurance comes down, sell it and get a turbo Impreza as it is difficult to tune an N/A without spending a shed load of money for a small increase in BHP.
2}Or you could drop a 2.5 N/A engine into your Wagon .......................

I was thinking of leaving it, just wondered if there was any point trying to tune it, how easy or hard would it be swapping it for a 2.5?
