Hi all, im getting abit of smoke coming out of my bonnet vent when in stopped. It seems to do it for like the first 15-20 mins after starting it from cold. Then after that it doesn't smoke at all. Any idea's what this could be? I don't use it alot only every other weekend or so. Im thinking it might be an exhaust gasket gone and when its cold it leaks but expands when hot. Car is a 97 turbo 2000 on 96k, all standard too.

 

Maybe a leaking rocker cover letting oil drip onto the exhaust.

 

Sounds like rocker cover to me too!

 

Easy fix or nightmare job?

 

Havent done one myself but my old classic was doing the same which was the rocker cover, the main thing from what ive read is to make sure you use genuine gaskets and also do the seals around the plugs.

 

It's an easy ish fix mate, Just a bit fiddly but as the guys say use only genuine gasket half moons and seals for plugs,top bolts are easy bottom ones are fiddly, there are only 6 bolts.make sure you use good sealent.

 

There's also seals for the bolts, replacing those also is advisable.

 

Thanks for the input lads, I'll look into sorting it out. Iv only just put new plugs in it too and that wasn't as fiddly as i first thought it would be. Is is like a cork or metal type gasket and then a paste type gasket sealer with that too? Its a long time since iv done any kind of gasket .

 

Maybe check water pipes, is it smoke or steam you are seeing? It could be water pipe leaking then when hot it semi seals its self? Worth a check before fighting with your rocket covers. I had the same issue, it was a pin hole in the rad joint, as it was plastic, new ally rad sorted it.
I have a feeling the gasket for the rockers maybe a liquid seal, if you need to do these, you'll need to get both mating surfaces really clean being careful with razor blades and (nail polish remover) Worth spending time getting the surfaces really really clean to ensure a good seal.

 

They are rubber gaskets, but, sealant is used in addition to them. Make sure the mating surfaces are clean of oil.
