Shattered Rear Screen Nightmare!!
#1
On Monday night I was at a party and a 4ft rocket came down and shattered the rear screen on my UK turbo(MY99)impreza saloon.
The next morning I phoned my insurance company's claim line and they confirmed that I was not entitled to a courtesy car and put me onto their glass company, Silvershield. The guy there checked with his supplier and phoned me back to say that because it was a £500 piece of glass it would have to be ordered and would be here on Friday. I phoned Silvershield this afternoon to find out what time they would be coming to fit it (expecting it to be just as the footie was starting) and he then gave me even better news . He said that it was now on back order and wouldn't be here until next Thursday and that the turbo was a specialist vehicle and the rear screen on these is different to the standard model ?
I then phoned my local Subaru dealer to see if they could confirm this apparent difference and also to find out if they could get one any quicker. They said that as far as they are aware, there is no difference in the rear screens between the turbo model and any of the other impreza saloon variants. They also said that they could not locate any rear screens in the UK for my model and that the next shipment was due in on Monday.
Has anyone had a similar experience like this and had to wait such a long time without a courtesy car?
Also, can anyone confirm 100% that the rear screens on the turbo are different to the other variants?

You didn't phone the RAC about this at all did you?
I have a mate who works for them, and he was telling me about someone who phoned him with exactly the same story. Even down to him having to wait till Next week because it's special fitment.

Andy - I have only spoken to Wren, Silvershield & Subaru at Lincoln about this so it must be a coincidence that it has also happened to your mate. Do you know which which glass repair company is replacing his?
It was the guy at Silvershield who reckoned that it is special fitmet. Lincoln Subaru reckon that the rear screen is no different to any other impreza saloons. They appreared to be saying that the lengthy delay is because of the shortage of rear screens in the country for my particular model year. This would seem to make sense as it is usually the front screen that gets broken and they obviously carry a higher number of those on stock.
Adam - When I phoned Wren back to let them know the length of the delay, I asked if I could try another glass company. They said that this would not be possible as they only use Silvershield. The guy I spoke to also reckons that nearly all insurance companies use only one glass company. Never had to make a windscreen/glass claim since I've been driving(13 years) so don't know if this is true or not
Does anyone know if the rear screens are different?

Silvershield phoned today and said that the rear screen has just arrived with them and they will be coming to fit it in the morning - 12 days since the incident. The invoice they have received for it is £658.30 - glad I'm only paying the £50 excess.
The moral of this story - if you don't want your car out of action for nearly 2 weeks, TAKE CARE OF YOUR REAR SCREEN .

I used to work in a body shop,we once had a scoob in for rear end repairs. We had Autoglass out to remove and refit the screen, absolutely no problemo at all, no different from any other window I've seen, I don't see their problem
RE availability, yeah it's a complete pain in the **** getting parts from far overseas, it's just as frustrating for the dealer as it is for you, not a great deal can be done about it though, unfortunately
One thing to keep an eye out for, take a good look at the trims that go up the edges of the screen and up onto the roof, these are a bitch to get on and off without damage

The rear screen is now in but more feckin problems. The chap left after telling me I can't drive it for 4-5 hours and then when I do I need to give it another 24 hrs before I can go over 60mph or wash it.
Anyway, as soon as he left I went inside to watch the footie. When the match had finished I went outside to have a closer look at what he had done. Firstly, there is a inch gap in the lower screen seal and 2 more areas in the upper seal that are not actually flush against the glass . Then I noticed the scratches - one on the roof about 5 inches long where he had obviousley wiped round the edge of the screen and got a piece of glass in the cloth - two together on the side rear panel below where the spoiler meets the boot - one on the boot and finally one down the side panel next to where plastic inserts go that are mentioned in the previous post.
I phoned the insurance company about the complaints and they said that I would need to make a seperate claim in respect of the scratches and this would be classed as an actual claim on my policy (unlike the actaul glass claim). They said that I should take the issue up with Silvershield. I did this but the depot is closed until Monday morning.
Anyone else had a similar experience?
