Default Water leak Classic

Hi All,

I have a MY99 UK 2000 Turbo with a number of mods. I have a water leak in the area of the drivers side headlight. The water seems to hit the underside of the Bonet. I have checked and changed the top rad hose but this has not solved the problem. I have had a good look at the water pipes around the area with the engine upto temp on idle but can't see any water leaking.

I have an Apexi cone filter linked to hard line FMIC induction pipes so relatively open in that area. I do have a cold airfeed but can clearly see it is the coolant in the engine bay as its blue.

Does anybody have any suggestions where to look next?

Cheers All.

Probably top-hose pinholed.

Mine did the same, it only showed up when the engine was up to temperature and pressurised the system, even then it only let out little squirts so you had to watch carefully to see it...the steam was the giveaway

On removal, the inside of the hose looked like someone had attacked it with a very sharp razor blade, splits everywhere.

It could also be the crossover pipe at the base of the engine behind the rad, it's metal, with flexible ends, but suffers from corrosion. You can see it better from underneath with the undertray off.

Cheers for the suggestion. I have changed the top hose to a silicone replacement and all looks in good condition and joints strong. I have no undertray on or arch liners for that matter! Not sure which cross over pipe you are reffering too. Is it this pipe?

I assume its on the bottom? Not sure how the water/coolant would hit the underside of the bonet if this is under engine, but will try have a look to locate it.

That's the one. If it's leaking, when the car is moving it chucks water everywhere from air being sucked in through the grilles.

If it's not that, what about your rad? It's possible to fracture the spigot where the top hose and that tiny hose go on. They crack when replacing hoses, then leak under pressure. Solution is a new rad.

Ah okay, great, thanks more thinks to check. Is it worth upgrading the Rad, seen one on here for £109 all in alloy? Problem is that maybe that my FMIC hard pipes run to the right hand side of the rad (looking in from bumper) so need to know if its the same size (thinckness). Will ask supplier. Cheers.

Mine runs 400+/400 on a standard rad...no probs at all.

I swapped it for another standard at around 80,000 and 14 years old when the core started turning to dust with age and salt.

I had this only 4 months ago - only showed up when car had warmed up = new rad....

I was warned about it by the (local) seller of my new rad. Went VERY carefully when fitting new.

Cheers guys, that does sound like the culprit. I took it easy this morning and had a little water, so guess the more pressure its use the more it leaks.
Sounds like I may have damaged it when changing the water pipe, but can't actually see anything.
Gonna opt for an upgrade as less fragile, will also change the water pump to oil cooler pipe too to be sure. Fingers crossed that solves it. thanks for your help, all that is easy enough for me to do too, so no labour costs!

But please, please, do a search on here and refill using it.

Otherwise, your next question could well be, "My car seems to be airlocked and I think it's knackered the headgasket..."

Search under my username, I've posted a how to often enough.

And use decent anti-freeze designed for an alloy engine, but don't be sucked in with Subaru advertising.

What would you class as a decent make of antifreeze? Best source?

Thanks for all of your help, its really appreciated.

I have 3 pipes coming from my header tank. Do I use the one that goes to the turbo? I.e. like filling up the turbo? Sorry for noob questions. Or do I use a different one. When refilling system?

Yes re fill via the turbo hose - back fills system, do it very very slowly and carefully so not to get any air bubbles in

Yes, sorry, that's the one. Stuff a funnel down it and fill slowly.

Use any antifreeze bought for a car with an alloy engine, decent motor factors are the best place to buy.
