Default why are 754 gearboxes stronger than 752 series ?

As title really, been researching into what gearbox to get, i have the 752 series yet the 754 is meant to be stronger, some say its because the case doesnt flex as it has more mounting points, ok cool, yet if fitting to an early classic you still only use 4 of those 8 mounting points so surely on an early classic the 754 series si just as prone to strip gears as the 752 series ????

cheers

I found this quiet interesting regarding strengthening the 5spd.
Looks like it could be easy to fabricate for someone who knows what they're doing. I've only seen this in the US,would be interesting to see if anyone in he UK has done this with good results.

My friend had a rebuild from them on his five speed about 4 years ago and its still in one piece,so as long as there prices are reasonable it might be worth a punt.SJ.

well had a reply back, £600 with VAT to fit the uprated gears, thats not including delivery or return of your box, so about £700 all in with shipping.

think i will buy a £100 752 and if it pops again in a year, will replace it again lol

Hi Bud,

when you say had your box rebuilt, as in ?

I went for the same box to replace my broken one, the 752vb3fa, the 754vb1aa is like rocking horse poop and the VN1AA (uk box has longer gear ratios) and i didnt want to spoil my WRX as i like the higher revs, quicker spool up etc

if you do opt for a 754vn box, make sure you get matching diff and you will also need the driveshafts off that model of car as the wrx has different rear driveshafts to that of a vn1aa car.

good luck bud

Not sure on the last few digits but it's the stronger box of the 752 on my rb5 running 335bhp... had a faint rattle in 3rd gear the other week so sent it for a rebuild on 3rd gear (new gear set) but sadly spat it out at oulton park on the 3rd lap while I was in gear around 4k revs... Looking into a 6 speed but the cost is stupid... but I'm so surprised these 5 speed boxes were never made stronger.

Dont think there is a stronger version of a 752 box, they are all known (from factory anyway) to have weak 3rd gears and selector for 1st and 2nd.

Unless you have that stronger 3rd gear fitted by the GEARS company, with pallet delivery nearing £700 !! with VAT, 3rd will always be weak above 300 bhp, just seems to be pot luck some last with alot more, some pop with alot less.

mine went up hill full boost in 3rd around 4-5k, so i kind of asked for it lol

Waiting for mine to be stripped back down and see what state it's in. Whether it was a bad gear they fitted or I need to upgrade... Should find out by the end of the week.
