Doesn't have "lifters" as such, hydraulic or otherwise.

Valve clearance is manually adjusted - its a service item.

Have a look here

Don't think you understood the question. He's on about an impreza type R. Not a civic type R

No they dont have hydraulic lifters.

Could need the valve clearances doing but could also be :

Exhaust gas leak from exhaust manifold/header that side.

Spark plugs loose - gives a loud tick as the compression blows past the loose plug.

Noisy injectors.

Hope it's something simple

Ha! I KNEW Mick would reply to his question.

Mick, does the MY99/00 heads have 'tophat' followers - or is it the MY97/98? Or both? Can't remember.

WRX '99/00 have outer (over bucket ) shims.
STi 5 ~ 6 have inner ( under bucket ) shims.

' tophat ' shims were fitted to the STi Version 2 RA

The hydro lifters limit potential power, don't they? Good for around 380bhp, but not much more?

Yes, STi Version 3 to 6 use a solid bucket with under bucket shim for valve clearance adjustment.
STi Version 2 uses lightweight hydraulic lifters.

Cheers Mick for info, how often if ever do you need to check the adjustment. I have never heard of anyone getting this done before?

IIRC, it's not part of the Service Schedule, normally done when the engine is rebuilt.

The exhaust valve clearances do tend to get smaller as the mileage of the engine gets higher( 90k+ ) due to valve seat recession/micro welding of the valve seat and face.

SOHC N/A engines generally have screw and locknut adjusters and it's easy to pull the cam covers and adjust the clearances as I did on the wife's Bugeye N/A wagon recently - Inlet clearances were loose and exhaust clearances were 0.005" smaller than the minimum spec but the car has done a whopping 210,000 miles

UK models which use the Outer bucket shim can be adjusted with the engine 'in situ' using the Subaru service tool.

All under bucket and selective bucket type engines require the cams to be removed to adjust the valve clearance.

Mick, just out of interest on the 99-00 how does this adjustment take place? I.e. what is the process? Does the tool compress the springs and allow you to slide the shims out?

You bolt the tool in place on top of the relative cam cap using one of the cam cap bolts, and wind down the forked arm of the tool down onto the edges of the cam bucket you want to remove the shim from.
Once the bucket is depressed enough, the shim can be flicked out of the top of the bucket with a small screwdriver and magnet.

Will see if I can get a photo of it in action.

I just did mine with two screwdrivers 👍
No special service tool available.
What is the recommended valve clearances on the large 99-01 outer shim type?

Inlets 0.006"~0.008"
Exhausts 0.008"~0.010"

Yes please mate.

As you are in the know.
What is the best way to check piston to valve clearance on a new built impreza block?
