Default engine idetificatin help

Hi guys,

I've recently purchased a Subaru based kit car which is fitted with a 2.0l turbo engine. I'm currently trying to work out exactly what engine is installed in the car.

I've found two numbers on the back of the block, the engine serial number is B055059 located next to the starter, there's also a 12 digit number, 860100860979, on the bell housing flange.

here's a couple of poor pictures.

Judging by where the coil pack is it will be a 1997 1998 car
Red inlet manifold means it probably is a JDM car.
Check the plate on the front strut tower for the model code

Thanks for the input guys,

Unfortunately there's no vin plate as the engine is in a kit car, so I don't have the original model number. I also don't have the car yet, but hoping to get some better pics over the weekend.

Just really wanted to check if it is possible to confirm the engine type from the serial numbers stamped on the block near the bell housing and starter.

The numbers printed on the block by the bell housing is the engine number. However this does not tie up with the model type/year. That info is not available end off. On a PC somewhere in the depths Subaru Japan there probably is a list that correlates engine numbers to model years.

Given what I can see it is a V3/4 JDM STI from 1997/1998. Probably... as this engine like many Subaru engines has been in and out of cars and probably rebuilt at somepoint ect.

The above info, without the vin plate is as close as you will get.

Managed to get a bit more history on the car, and know that it was prevuously fitted with a 2.1 stroker motor. but not sure if it still has the same engine fitted.

I've got a couple of pictures with the sump off, although i'm not sure if it really helps.
