Default Buying a 2nd Hand gearbox

So, its always risky buying 2nd hand, i need a TY752VB3FA 95 WRX box, now, ive looked at a recon`d unit, looking at like £500+ , so ive looked at 2nd hand units, these range from £50 to £450 !!

So, anything to look for when its off the car ? does a £50 box mean its fooked even tho they say it was working fine and does a £450 2nd hand box means its spot on even tho theres no way of knowing !?!?!?

My gearbox was serviced, had 2 oil changes in its life and i still had it lose 3rd gear, so maintenance dont mean anything either

So !?!?!?!?!!?!?

Cheers

Think of it like horse racing, the less you bet the less you lose when it goes wrong and your luck will run out. Its the nut behind the wheel that decides how long its going to last. If you're pushing over 300 flb through a 15-20 year old box its got every right to go pop.
On a serious note I've bought two gear boxes from East Kent Subaru spares. The first was 5 speeder uk box that was fine and took everything that was thrown at it and they also supplied a 6 speed DCCD box, excellent after sales service too.

A rebuilt box by a specialist like API is the way forward if you can afford it.

That 1st line you say is a good moto tho, granted apart from the time, if i buy a cheap gearbox and it went pop, ive only wasted my time, i could buy a £300 box and it too might go pop, unless its been stripped which none that are 2nd hand have been, how can you ascertain its a good box ?

Id of guaranteed my gearbox was good if selling it, oil changes etc, yet it went pop as its pushing 300+ bhp, so cheap or expensive its the same risk i think and the only question to ask is, was the car modified it came from or stock lol, if stock, it might last a bit longer when put into a tuned car
