Default Oil filter blown off.....

Hi,

Driving home from work, heard a pop from engine and saw some steam/smoke so pulled over straight away and found oil filter was off, put it back on and topped up oil (luckily had se in the boot) checked engine turns ok, started it and it blew the filter off....

What could cause this?

Cheers

not done up correctly, its threaded so if it went back on the threads are fine. if it blew off as you say the threads would be damaged.
but saying that if it was hanging on by a few threads id be sure it would be leaking vastly

Cheers, it's been on for 6 months with no issues and done a track day and never leaked (to be honest I checked all levels etc last night) just seems really strange and I can't work out how it has happened

Faulty or incorrect filter? Check the threads on both the filter and on the engine.

What make is it?

I cracked an oil filter once on my land rover...boy did that make a mess, its amazing how much oil is lost in 10 seconds of running (4litres!), even with a tiny hairline fracture (engine survived) !

As in #7, PRV has prob stuck shut.
Has the oil filter 'ballooned' out at the bottom compared to a new one.

I had a blue one blow off on me a few years back.
Fortunately I was stood next to the car and manged to get the engine turned off sharpish.
Again it had been on for a fair while and just blew. I guess perhaps to it not being fitted quite right? It was just a freaky one off as far as I was concerned.

There was a batch of faulty Blue OEM filters Steve, there is a sticky at the top of the General Tech section.
Luckily, you caught it in time
