Default Fuel pump replaced but car won't start...

Good afternoon. I have just replaced my fuel pump but the car won't start. I have obviously missed something or done something wrong but I'm at a loss as to what exactly. I replaced like for like and I made sure all the connectors etc were identical before putting the cage back in the tank. When I turn the key in the ignition the pump primes ok but when I try to start the car all I get is a fast clicking sound. Can anyone help diagnose my problem and tell me how to fix it please?

Many thanks in advance
Chris

If it was a fuse or relay it wouldn't prime would it?

You have a flat battery. Boot light has been on, interior light and you may have been listerning to the radio while doing the job

The keys weren't in the ignition when doing the job but it's easy enough to jump the car and check to be sure.

Thank you for all the suggestions so far, please keep them coming so I can get the car going again

fast clicking -- could be from the relay ?

how about running a 12 volt supply direct to the pump just to see if it will run ?

Fast clicking or ticking sound but not turning over is usually a flat battery.

Thank you to all who mentioned the battery. Having hooked it up to the better halfs car it fired up ok. I have learned something through the process so hopefully it will be a while before the next silly question!
