Why is my 02 bug eye overboosting?
Hi all,
Went to finally collect my Scoob tonight. I test drove it a few weeks ago and it was faultless, its been parked up and not used for at least three weeks and when I drove it home this happened everytime it came on boost.

Boost gauge goes all way round and alarm tone sounds.
Its an 02 bug STI PPP on 53000 miles.
Going to drive it again tomorrow to see if it clears. Car drives fine off boost.

Makes sense! So in effect it's almost working like a manual boost controller.. more boost but no change on the map, can't be healthy or will the ecu adjust to it?

You've nothing to worry about if your car has been set up properly I guess. Someone had installed a manual boost controller (as well as having old cracked vacuum lines) to my car before I bought it. I was seeing boost up to 1.6bar at times. It had also had a new crank, rods and pistons too. Says it all really! I removed it immediately to get boost back to normal until I installed ESL. Better safe than sorry!

Just had a thought. The car seems tombe driving normally and there were no problems before it was parked up - could it be the defi controller gauge playing up?

Karl I'm sorry to invade your post.
So my car (06 hawk sti) over boosts to 1.2bar. It's on a standard map.
The car on Tickover sits at -24in/Hg vacuum. The workshop manual states that idle vacuum pressure should be less than -17.72in/Hg. So I guess this goes in hand with that somewhere a hose is damaged? I have no idea what I'm looking for truthfully..

Overboost on a car you've just picked up could also because previous owner crushed the pill or put a smaller one in to the vac pipe that come off the turbo leading to the t-piece..

Well this is embarrassing.
Turns out the warning light on the defi was set to 1 bar and the rattle is a sheared bolt on the exhaust heatshield.
Car is all sorted and going to scooby clinic next sunday.
