Default How has this happened?

Hi All,

Took my turbo off today to replace some gaskets on up pipe that were blowing and noticed the state of the wheel? looks like something has passed through it, but I dont see how it could have as I have a mushroom filter that wouldnt let anything through?

If I just buy a new wheel can I just replace it , or do they need balancing etc?

New turbo i think or a rebuild by a professional and whats caused it is a mystery but it must have been in my mind a metallic object and quite large as it looks like it got stuck and the vanes just rubbed away on it until it went out into the engine intake manifold.

Id be more worried about the bits of missing metal eating the pistons or cylinders.

Yeah that was what I was thinking, but engine is spot on, and turbo still pulls brilliant @ 1.4 bar, just doesnt hit full bost until 4000 ish? (Had to put it back on to drive the car daily) was only off as changing gaskets?

Was gonna buy a billet wheel - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Turbo-Bill...item19e78064a1

Just not sure if I can just bolt the new wheel on?

No noises etc, only thing I can imagine is whilst turbo or MAF has been off a nut or washer has dropped into the intake pipe.

Engine seems fine though??

I think you need to look back at previous work done on the car as to what might have caused this and where the offending part has gone to in the intercooler or intake manifold if you are lucky or one of the cylinders if not.

Nope definitely not like it when I fitted it... All work done on the car by myself for the last year or so...

Just as a note the hot side fins are all fine...

Have you checked your filter for rivet head , or fixing damage - if not could be a small stone or Tarmac frag kicked up

Yup, definitely looks that way, I just cant work out where from? It's a big job to take inlet manifold off isnt it? although I have been looking at going rotated inlet so could be a good excuse to do that at the same time. its a Greddy T518Z turbo (Which yes is basically a TD05-18G variant)

Ooh no, good shout, will check inside of the filter today. just dont see how anything could have got through it so yeah maybe the filter has broken inside or something.

just sack it and get a new one, casing maybe damaged as well.

looks like it has injested summit big, can see what looks like scratches on the inlet pipe as well.

A above hope its not passed through, mate had a spark plug tip come off and it totaled his engine

You can change the wheel your self , just remove big c clip on compressor housing then the nut on the wheel , (might be a left hand thread) shouldn't need a balance as they are component balanced
