Going from when I did my classic around 6 weeks ago the bolts in the heat shields came out with no issue's but had to use a breaker bar on the nuts to undo the downpipe, they all came off after without any problems except one nut and bolt which cross threaded on the way off so maybe worthwhile buying a new set of nuts and bolts before you start which you can get from Import Car Parts. As for access you'll have no problems there.

If you are going to try attacking the downpipe bolts with a spanner first it maybe an idea to wear a suitable pair of gloves unless unlike me you enjoy the pain of loosing some skin from your knuckles when you slip with the spanner!

Down pipe can be an absolute bitch. Some undo easily but some are just so rusted up you end up chiseling the old nuts off. You definitely want a new set of studs and nuts and a gasket. Don't use cheap sockets or spanners as you will round the nuts off. Good luck!
